Article on shaving in today's Washington Post-and they mention B&B

That wasn't a very good article, more odd than anything. My take from it is that B&B users are a bunch of conspiracy theorists that don't know what we're talking about and P&G employs scientists to study how create a razor that delivers the best shave. How on earth could a razor 50 years old be better than what they come up with???

I'm slightly impressed that Gillette is taking time to bash their old way of shaving. It must be really taking off to get their attention.

The people at Gillette who developed their old way of shaving have either long ago retired, or were broomed out at the exec level and replaced with P&G types starting in 2005. It's those P&G execs who are bashing the old ways developed by Gillette.

I researched an ointment recently given me by my doctor and found it was a product of Beiersdorf of Hamburg, Germany, parent company of Nivea.

A few years before P&G bought Gillette, they had an offer out to buy enough stock to take over Beiersdorf. News of this deal panicked the people of Hamburg, as they knew P&G is into brands, and not the company, or the local economy. A deal was cut with the City of Hamburg and the founding family of Beiersdorf to keep controlling interest local.

The people of Hamburg are happy, the management at Beiersdorf is happy, and the ointment by Beiersdorf has helped my scrapes from a bicycle fall to heal nicely.

I thought it was pretty critical of both sides. We are luddite conspiracy theorists, and Gillette is a bastion of faux-science. It didn't give any particularly useful information, though...

I thought it was pretty fair, on both sides. I thought it gave a slight favor to the 1937 study over Gillette, saying the '37 study conclusions back up the DE crowd. The best part was it gave a link to B&B.

I wonder will this article lead to even more people jumping over to DE and straight shaving and away from the multi cartride? I wonder shall we see a reflection of such on the E-bay prices over the next few days/weeks? ;)

What about this guy: "The multi-blades work great. And you don't have to change the blades for a long time. I think a lot of it gets down to how tough your beard is. Mine is not made up of industrial strength hairs. So I get at least two or three months from one blade, sometimes more. They are expensive initially, kind of like flourescent light bulbs. You pay a lot up front, but in the long run they are cheaper and do a better job."

Wow...just, wow. I'll bet this guy wouldn't know a DE, SE or straight razor if you threw one at him...which is kind of what I'd like to do actually. :001_rolle

I actually had a friend who used the same Schick Hydro 5 for a semester. I dug up some old carts and gave them to him the night before graduation so he could get a decent shave.

I get the impressions Gillette does not want to many people looking to vintage razors as an answer to many of their problems,...

we see countless people improve their faces by changing to the DE, and or Straights on our forum here, I was shocked at just how dismissive the rep was at what we all do.

was a good read though thanks for sharing

It struck me that P & G pretty much got a free ad under the guise of "reporting". But...maybe not and their hearts are pure :confused1

Having dealt with a few reporters, what passes for journalism these days is about 5 minutes on the phone, often with the first person that will talk to them, whether they have any real expertise or knowledge in the field or not... Generally they will call late in the day trying to meet some deadline in a few hours. What you end up with is half-truths and downright wrong information, all because they are in such a damn hurry and take **** poor notes. If they would simply follow up before reporting a story they might actually get some of it right.

My dad still uses a fusion, but admits he thinks Gillette is a racket with cartridges, truth is, they found a way to up blade sales from .50 to 2.50, might just come down to profit, who could blame them, they seem to re invent the razor every few years. Kirby vacuum does the same thing, I used to restore them and my 1965 model does every bit as well as my 1995 model.

Best line of the article, about research:

Yep that line sums up the article best.

If they had stayed with Injectors and Astra 2 I would have been pleased as punch, But they are trying to rob us blind with these 4-6 and next will be 8 blade monsters.
