I've been thinking about trying a Hard arkansas lately just for fun. Is there much of a difference between hard arks and surgical black/translucent? I know the crystalline chert is the same particle size, just different densities make up the different stones.

In vintage stones no. What qualifies as hard today would be medium at best back then. You hardly ever see any hard arkansas that weren't at least leaning translucent in vintages. The really old stuff has this near amber coloring, but is still translucent.
lemme know if you want one... i just picked up a few surgical blacks....
