In the 40's there were two Gillette Aristocrat Junior models, #48 from 1948 and #53 from 1949.
I know the #48 has a lighter handle but does it translate into a different kind of shave (edit: compared to #53, that is)? I've got the impression that most people seem to think more weight = better shave. Both models have the flat base plate in any case.
I've also read the 1948 model came either in a blue or white bakelite case (the other one apparently for the Australian market) but I've seen a couple in a brown bakelite case. Are they a mismatch?
