are these good suits?

amazon.com is having a suit sale and was wondering if any of these brands are considered high quality. i'm still fairly ignorant when it comes to suit brands so if you can offer any insight into the quality of these brands i'd greatly appreciate it

Whats your definition of good?

They don't meet my definition of good. Of course, my definition requires full canvas construction. Nothing less shall do. And those Gino Valentinos are liars.

I guess I don't really have a definition of good. I like the cut of Hugo Boss suits, minus the pricetag, but when you get down to it I couldn't tell the difference between a good suit vs a bad suit. what should I be looking for exactly? :001_huh:

we need one of those How to Pick a New Suit threads kind of like the How to Pick a Brush thread heh. I am in the same boat as you gaseousclay.

I would say that, aside from the suit-maker's reputation, a lot of what makes a suit right for you comes down to how it fits you specifically. A good suit should obviously be tailored to you as much as possible.

No matter what suit you get, a good tailor can modify the waist, sleeves, inseam, etc. all fairly easily. But the overall drape and especially the fit in the shoulders and upper torso are usually much harder to modify.

But if you can get free shipping and free (or discounted) returns, and you more or less know your suit size and the reputation of the suit-maker, why not buy a few suits, try them on, and return them if they don't work out?

The most important part of any suit purchase is the fit. However, I wish you good luck in finding one that fits you "good" off the rack. I haven't found one. Ok, Armani slim fit comes close, but its not perfect. And the pants aren't perfect either.

What I end up doing is having most of the suit redone. I get perfect shoulder fit, as close as possible to my waist size, sleeve length and jacket length. Everything else I get altered. But thats because I have a large drop, its very annoying. Drop is the difference between chest and waist.

Anyway, check these out.

If you have the money to spend, MTM from a good store is the way to go for your first suit. Otherwise, be prepared to spend an inordinate amount of time trying suits on. And do your own research on how suits should fit you (tons of info on the internet), don't rely on salespeople. They want to sell you a suit.

this was what I was wondering. when I got my last suit tailored I only had the waist brought out, the sleeve length shortened and the pants shortened/hemmed, but the next time I go to my tailor i'd like to know specifically what I should be asking him to do besides these things.

Notice the pants rise (distance between waist and bottom of crotch) is too long in the pants. The seat is too big (circumference of your butt). Pants matters too. Unfortunately not all my suits' pants have the correct rise. Very annoying, but I'm not going to fix it because the suits themselves are throwaway suits and not worthy of any more investment.

Also, the thigh is too big. If you have large thighs in proportion to your calves, your going to want the leg to taper more.

I'd definitely want a suit that fits me like a glove (like the pic on the right). i've seen too many people in baggy suits and the 'frumpy' look just isn't my thing. I wonder if an off the rack slim fit suit would fit like the pic on the right?
