are blades different in different razors?

I just got a merkur futur and have been using a 33c. My question is are the blades I've been using with the 33c that i found to be the best going to be the best with the futur too or do i need to start thinking about getting a bunch of different blades to find the best for this razor?

Your miles will vary, the blade doesn't sit the same in all the different razors which means what works for one, may or may not work for the other. This is especially true for the adjustable razors like the futur. My suggestion, try the razor you like with your 33c in the futur, find the adjustment that works best for you, you you find the blade to "just not getting it done" after exhausting the adjustments, then go on a blade quest for that razor. That's just my 2¢.

I go old school and use the same make and model of blade in every razor I use, and get great shaves. I also use an adjustable razor the same way people use the Ron Popeil Showtime Rotisserie; set it, and forget it.

Yes, they can feel a lot different in different razors. My #1 blade (carbon steel Captain) works great in Merkur 3-piece razors and in the Lord LP1822, sublime in my Gladweg but isn't a really nice blade in my Mühles/EJ's.

I love Med Prep/Labs in my Mergress, but they suck in my Tech. The difference is almost unbelievable.

Long answer:

Each razor "may" bend the blade a different amount which will present the same blade differently to your face. All this means is that you may need to adjust the angle that you hold the razor to your face to get the same performance out of the same blade when it is used in different razors.

Short answer:

Maybe :001_smile

Advice:

Your new Futur is going to "show" much more blade set at its lowest setting than your current model 33c razor does so it is going to feel a LOT differently on your face and require you to adjust your technique with that razor in order to get the same quality shave with it.

It is not so much the blade but how you use it. Try adjusting how you hold the razor. Make sure you are not changing the angle as you move the razor to shave. Try to lock your wrist and elbow and move your entire arm in one motion as a single unit as you shave. Keeping your entire arm locked in place may see odd to you at first but once you get used to it you will adjust how much locking you need in order to be able to move the razor without moving the angle that you are holding it at.

The Futur is going to "demand" that you become a better shaver than your old razor as it is not as forgiving to small mistakes as your old razor was.

Don't worry too much about this as you will get used to what your new razor wants you to do with practice. The main thing is to not give up and blame the razor but to improve how you shave so that you can "tame" it down and get a fine shave with it.

Thanks everyone.... I'll keep the same blade for a little while so i will know that the variables are me and not just the various blades... I do suspect a lit of blades in my future though!
