Apollo Ben Hur open comb?

Well I dug around on the internet a while on this one. Found nothing on this razor. Found it in an antique store cased in a gillette blue flare tip box, with unopen blades. Heard the name Apollo before and thought for a few bucks what the heck! Do any of the experts here have any information about this? At the bottom of the handle it says Ben Hur, and the head of this three piece razor is clearly marked Apollo.

Nice pick-up. I'm not an Apollo expert, but that's a great-looking razor and it sounds like you got it for a great price!

I've read about them here, but never saw one. I'll be following this thread with interest. It looks as if it will take a modern blade. How's the weight on it?

It's a decent weight. About the same as a red tip (not scientific just feels around the same weight). It definitely takes a modern DE. Had a wilkenson in it when it was sold. I weighed the head it comes in at 27g and the whole razor is 56g. Haven't cleaned it up yet, but it looks shiny without any work! Not bad for $5.

these 3 hole Ben hurs razors were similar to Merkurs and Apollo razors, it seems that someone interchanged your handle.

Any idea what the handle should look like Alex? Thanks for the info so far. I thought it might be two diff makers.

The most german Apollo-razors were produced before 1945 (slants and CCs). They were marked with "D.R.G.M." (Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs-Muster). I think, that the shown OC-Apollo was produced in the 50s (Made in Germany). It is the very first Apollo-OC, I have seen.
