What's new

Anyone tried pine tar soap, especially as a dandruff shampoo?

I've suffered from dandruff for years, and currently use (a generic Walmart version of) Neutrogena T/Gel. I've been thinking about trying out a pine tar bar soap for both hair and body; does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm getting old. 1st thing I thought of when I saw pine tar was George Brett

sorry to hijack your thread op

A friend of mine suffers from psoriasis, she uses a pine tar type soap for treatment for it.She says it really works for her but she does not care for the smell.

I've heard Grandpa's Pine Tar soap is wonderful, but when I saw some in a soap store, I picked it up and it smelt terrible. My wife wouldn't allow it in the house.

I used a bar of this on a whim 15-20 years ago. It made spectacular lather, made me smell like I was doused in Lysol while I was lathering, most of the aroma rinsed off.

Every 4-5 years I come down with a case of dandruff and Selsun Blue always worked well for me. The tar shampoo wasn't doing anything for me.

Most Pine Tar soaps need to be hung out in the Barn for a Month because they are very strong smelling. But they do work !

It does work. The smell, as everyone says, is terrible. Best price I found locally was Ingles grocery store. $2.88 per bar.

Used the Grandpa's Tar Soap today. I really like the smokey scent. Just as Itchy said, reminds me of a nice campfire. I guess one time use won't do much for my skin. The soap lathers nicely and leaves a pleasant feel to the skin.

If I can use a bar for soap and shampoo, I'll have fewer liquids in my luggage and therefore a lot less hassle with the TSA on my all-too-frequent business trips.

If you don't have long hair, that should work just fine, it sure does for me.

I switched completely from shampoo & shower gel to using bar soap. Also as a soap at the sink. Taking shaving soap and a soap bar along when traveling really does ease the hassle.

I finally bought a bar of Grandpa's (it was in my local 5 and dime, go figure) and tried it this morning. Lathered up nicely, but left my hair feeling kind of stiff and squeaky, at least at first. We'll see how it feels during the day.

As for the smell, I like it; rather like a nice cup of lapsang souchong tea.

It has to have more positives than negatives or it wouldn't have been around as long as it has if advertising was its main selling point; ditto Thayer's, Dickinson's, Humphrey's Witch Hazel; Pears's Soap, Kirk's Castile Soap; etc.
