Anyone tried feather artist club ss?

Hi all:

I have finally decided to take the plunge and get myself a straight, think the feather artist clubs would be best as I haven't got the time to do the maintainence, stropping and honing that a straight needs. I've seen that feather have brought out the ss to go with the rg and dx but would like to know how the ss shaves before investing, although im willing to spend, the dx stuff is just too expensive for me.

Also does anybody know if anyone in the UK stocks them, nearest stockist I can find is in Ireland.

Thanks in advance

Bloomey

I have a DX and 2 SSs (folding and nonfolding). I prefer the SS to the DX and find that it gives a more comfortable shave. The SS was my first straight. The first shave was absolutely terrible, but pretty much by the third shave it was smooth sailing. I find the shaves closer and less irritating than with a DE.

FWIW I prefer the nonfolding SS to the folding SS. The nonfolding has a rubberized handle that feels good in the hand and doesn't slip. The folding handle is plastic and can be slick, but so are most scales on regular straights.

I purchased my nonfolding from shaving.ie in Ireland. Shouldn't take long to get to you in UK from Ireland.

I also have the SS and love it. It's the only disposable I own and it gives as good a shave as any straight.

I recently got an SS straight handle from the B/S/T here. To me, there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between it and the RG straight handle (at least in the shave) - the handles are a tad different and the ridge on the edge of the SS is noticeable but they are minor attributes that I like - but do not consider primary features. I also have a DX folding handle and I like all three. I just shaved with the SS this morning and was in a hurry so I only did a two pass. Very nice.

The SS supposedly hides the blade a little more (about .2 mm) than the others but in practice, I really can't tell the difference.

I am going to guess you use a more upright angles vs. more flat? The DX and SS feel quite different to me. IMO the SS shaves best with higher angles. YMMV of course .

I have an SS and and an RG. Of the two....I much prefer the SS. IMO it is more forgiving and as a result I get better shaves

I'm not sure. I use about the same angles as I do with a normal straight. Pretty aggressive for a Feather, probably. I know some can't get away with it but the only time I'm fairly cautious is around the corners of my mouth and lips. I DO start it flat usually - like many, my most memorable cuts have been when I put the razor up to my face... so I now start flat with all of them.

i have a feather SS in the non-folding version...... it does great.....

i also have the CJB kamisori's in the non-folding version... it does great at 1/2 the price.....

we have a pass around going with one of the cjb's right now....

Hmm. It's amazing how many different ways we all do and perceive things. I guess that's what makes it so interesting.

I prefer the RG to the SS (both folding), the RG just feels better in my hand and on my face. I also use the same angle as with a normal straight razor. I do have a non folding DX but I don't use it, I like the folding ones better maybe because of my big hands.

I have the non-folding SS and I love it. I use it maybe 5 or 6 days a week, then on the other day or two I might use something else.
You could maybe put up a WTB request on the BST and see if anyone can help. If you pay postage I'm sure someone has one they're willing to part with.
