Anyone shave with a gold razor?

Hey everyone,

I have a 24K gold plated 1930's New Open Comb (long comb) razor that I am hesitant to use. It's freshly re-plated by razor emporium. I'm afraid that If I use it too much, it'll ruin it's fantastic shine.

Long story short, does anyone use their nice and shiny gold plated razors or do they just sit on a shelf and look nice?

I say use it. If it was the original plating I'd probably use it sparingly, but since it's already a replate, you could just get a re-replate if it wears off.

To quote a very old cliche, "All ships are safe in the harbor, but that's not what ships are for."

Use it and enjoy it. Razor emporium's not going anywhere; so a decade or two from now if it needs another replating, send it back.

I use my 1936 Aristocrat every day. It's a razor....it's meant to be used IMO. If it wears, I can decide if I want to replate it.

I have a gold Toggle razor in my rotation. It seems to have held up fairly well.

I also have a vintage New that looks good, IMO.

You have to decide if you want to use it or have it as a museum piece. My Aristocrat still looks good and gives a great shave.

Thanks for the help on my decision making guys. You're right, Razor Emporium isn't going anywhere and I can always get it re-plated. Might as well enjoy it while I have it.

Also, I have a question. Did they all only come with the ball end handle? Mine has a 'bar' style handle. It's solid all the way to the bottom, no ball.
:badger:

Looks like this handle:

Why not both?

Why not use it and also admire it on the shelf.

Gently wiping it with a towel after each use will remove most of the soap scum between uses, and one can always clean it more seriously at blade change time, which for me is once a week.

I think I'll take it apart after each shave and make sure to wash it thoroughly before putting it away. It looks amazing on the stand beside the brush too.
