GIVEAWAY! Anyone in U.S. who wants to try Gillette 7 O'Clock Black - free blades!

@JCinPA My son is visiting for the weekend and he borrowed the Mark I Fatip you PIF'ed me and loaded it with a black ninja. He loved the combo.

I'll send him back to university with another Fatip (not the Mark I, lol) and the rest of the 7 O'Clock blacks. Thanks again for the generosity.

Shaved with the Merkur 34C again. Same result. Smooth and close. Very comfortable!!!

I have a bunch of small amounts of blade samples, and a few hundred of vintage Schicks and Gillette Spoilers, and maybe a hundred GSBs. But I used the 34C with this blade, replacing every Monday and Thursday so I got either 3 or 4 shaves for about 6 years straight before starting to experiment again. It's a solid combination.

At some point I will use one for a week, it would not surprise me if they did the distance. I used two blades per week because when I got my first batch of 800 of them over ten years ago they were a dime a blade. :eek2: Glad you guys are enjoying them.

Ages ago I sent a bunch of blacks and old Russian blues for folks to test side-by-side, and the results were a dead heat.

Here are the results of that comparison and folks used to think the Russian 7 O'Clock blues were magical.

@Dtownvino I was telling you about this at breakfast this morning.

I’ve always been curious how these hold up to the blues. I’ve never tried the blues but hear amazing things about them. Thanks for sharing the old link.

Was your MWF the good old formula tallow or the new palm oil based? MWF soap had been on my radar, along with other tallow classics like Tabac, but when they reformulated they fell off my radar.
Tallow-based MWF but I have heard rave reviews of re-formulated version as well. Once I’m through this puck I intend to re-stock with the new formula instead of hunting for the tallow-based.

Evening Shave

Prep:
> Shower and Charcoal Face Wash
Razor:
> Henson ++
Blade:
> Gillette 7 O'Clock SP (0 / +2 Passes) Blade 1
Soap:
> Catie's Bubbles- Mile High Menthol
Aftershave:
> Baylis & Harding- Citrus Lime Mint Balm
Pass type:
> WTG | XTG on chin, & neck below.

This is my first time using a 7 O'Clock SP blade.
Or any 7 O'Clock blade for that matter.

The Result:
Super fast gliding shave with 1 day of stubble. However, 1 small quick closing weeper on the chin and a small amount of irritation post shave. Irritation may not be the fault of the blade however. Some stubble feel all around when feeling ATG.

Acceptable+++

Gillette Black 7 O'clock Super Platinum - Shave #1

TL;DR -
Excellent 1st shave, BBS- close, some skin irritation, and "almost" a couple of drama dots

Equipment: SCS Mod A razor, Gillette Black 7 O'clock Super Platinum Blade (1), AB Mogno Soap, DSC T4 Brush

Interesting Wrapper Note: Although these are manufactured in India, the shape of the wrapper is the same as Gillette Shanghai. Maybe Gillette is standardizing on this wrapper shape.

On To The Shave: Excellent 1st shave with the Gillette Black Super Plat (GBSP)!! After whipping up some wonderful AB Mogno lather, the SCS Mod A and GBSP shaved all my worries and cares away!! It was BBS- close!! Between the WTG and ATG passes, I notice one area that "looked" like I might spring a leak; thankfully, no blood. There was some light skin irritation after the final rinse that subsided after a while.

Ok, so here is my "report" on these blades:

Thanks to you all for reporting back how you liked them, that's the fun of doing this thing! I appreciate it. Even if you didn't like it.

I never cease to be amazed at the YMMV nature of razor blades, which is wider than anything else, IMO--razors, creams, soaps. Blades are just amazingly wide in how they perform. Some blades 80% of folks don't like, but 10% of folks will label the same blade as their "desert island blade". Others 80% of folks will love them and some will say they are the worst shave of their life. Hawkweber is one of those, apparently. His experience is real, for him, no arguing with it, but I'm glad most of you seem to be liking this blade. Could be any combination of blade, razor, lather, and skin type, I suppose.

I bought about 800 of them 10 years ago, and I would say, for me, my favorite blade (now) is a Nacet, followed by these 7 O'Clock blacks, followed by the Gillette silver blue, in that order. They are very, very close, though, in terms of preference, I could happily shave with any of those three for the rest of my life.

Anyway, please keep sharing your experience with these, good or bad, I love the feedback! Everyone's opinion is 100% correct -- for them. No wrong answers. But I'm glad to see these are still highly thought of by most shavers.

Gillette Black 7 O'clock Super Platinum - Shave #2

TL;DR -
Another excellent shave, DFS+/BBS- close, some skin irritation, and a couple of drama dots

Equipment: SCS Mod A razor, Gillette Black 7 O'clock Super Platinum Blade (2), PdP 63 Soap, DSC T4 Brush

On To The Shave: Shave #2 was very similar to the 1st shave, very close, in the DFS+/BBS- range. Unfortunately, I did end up with a couple of red dots and similar light skin irritation (that calmed down quickly). These GBSP blades are handling the job just fine.

@JCinPA, I'm one of the 10% on the Nacet Blades, they do not agree with me at all

@Hawkweber, I'm with you on the Shark Super Chromes, these terrorize my face like a Great White does to a quiet New England fishing village.

I never cease to be amazed at the YMMV nature of razor blades….

I’m in the rare 10%, or maybe less, that has had the most nicks/blade with good old Astra SP’s. That blade seems to almost be universally liked, even my Rockwell blades never gave me a weeper.

For myself, I find that the face prep (hot cloth or pre-shave) and soap seem to make more of a difference than the blade.

Thank you @JCinPA

First, my favorite blades are Nacet, Perma-Sharp, Israeli Personna reds, and Personna labs.

I am now have used these blades three times (I typically use a blade 4 times and discard because I don’t want to use a blade past its prime).

I shave daily and used a Ti Blackbird and MdC Rose soap for all shaves.

The first shave presented a sharp blade that smoothed out during the three passes. There were no nicks, weepers or any other issues in what was a BBS shave.

Second and third shaves were even better. The blade was smooth and sharp through all three passes. This blade so far makes it in to my top tier. I will need to use a few more blades to judge the consistency of the blades, but so far very satisfied.

Yesterday, I finally had a shave with one of the 7 O'clock blades I threw into my Merkur 34C HD. loaded up some VDH Deluxe with my B&B Boar brush. I had about 3 days of growth and did the usual prep of a shower and a hot washcloth. The blade seemed to do fine, though felt like was doing more passes. There were no nicks, cuts, or irritation from the blade, so didn't need to use aftershave or alum over all the blade I think is good glad i got to try these finally I've been wanting to try

Gillette Black 7 O'clock Super Platinum - Shave #3

TL;DR -
Like shaves #1 & #2, DFS+/BBS- close, some skin irritation, and no drama dots this outing

Equipment: SCS Mod A razor, Gillette Black 7 O'clock Super Platinum Blade (3), Ach Brito Mogno Soap, DSC T4 Brush

On To The Shave: Results from shave #3 were very consistent with the 1st 2 shaves, very close, landing in the DFS+/BBS- range. Although I still had some light skin irritation, I did not have any red dots appear.

What Remains: Now I'm curious how long the GBSP blade will last for me.

Thanks for all the feedback, it’s so fun for me to hear. Yes, these and Nacets, and maybe Permasharps are my favorite blades. I can’t tell much difference between Nacets and the blacks, luckily I have quite a stash of them

My old MO with the 34C was to change them Mondays and Thursdays, that way I never got more than 4 shaves on one and I did not have to count. Many use them a full week, but I like about 4 because while still comfortable, closeness of shave falls off for me after that.

Great blades, though!

@Dtownvino I was telling you about this at breakfast this morning.

The blues and blacks are/were great blades. I wish I had purchased more blues when I could, but I used to only buy a few tucks at a time ( back then ). That said, the blacks are simply fabulous.
