What's new

Anyone else use pomade?

If so, what kind?

I recently started using pomade to go for the slicked 50's- early 60's "Mad Men" look.

It's not because of the hype you see in commercials for Axe product but I use Axe paste in my hair. It allows control without looking wet or greasy. If I allow my hair to air dry it looks fluffy and fuzzy and the hair paste is just enough to knock that down without looking like I'm wearing a product in my hair. It's cheap and readily available at Target so it works for me.

I really enjoy Schmere pomade. It comes in a few hold strenghts, and I opt for the toughest hold. I also enjoy knockout punch, and sweet georgia brown. It all depends on the mood and amount of hold I need.

I went from gel & other "modern" products to pomade and absolutely love it. I like that my hair stays soft all day, the pomades contain only few ingredients and aren't loaded with chemicals (isn't that why we stopped using goo from the can?). I dont' go for the very greasy wet-look, so I use pomade that doesn't create a lot of gloss. My favorites are Dax red and green as well as Murrays Nu Nile and Superior and the incredibly delicious smelling Sweet Georgia Brown blue. I might have slight PAD, I have 7 different kinds. I had to buy **** Grease for the name :biggrin1:

I've used American Crew Grooming Paste for many years but just swtiched to Imperial Barber Matte Paste. Both work for me.

Baxters of California clay pomade - water soluble and reasonably firm hold although you won't get the slicked-back look of traditional pomades

I've used many over the years, the Dax, in the green jar, and Duke, in the gray can, were always favorites. Hard to find either of those in the last few years. I also would sometimes use Royal Crown Hair Dressing, which was pretty greasy/oily stuff. These days I'm using the Sportin' Waves pomade that you can find at a lot of supermarkets. I do occasionally also use Groom & Clean on the weekends, and will sometimes touch up my hair in the evenings with Jerris Hair Tonic.

I started using it recently though I prefer the more non-traditional pomades that don't leave a shine but rather a matte look. I have thick hair and need to control it from 'froing out but also don't want the slick look and need to have it wash out fairly easily.
Baxter's of California cream pomade is good, their soft water pomade is pretty decent.
Jason had a really good one but they discontinued it unfortunately (as they did their very good 6 in 1 beard and face aloe aftershave).
Recently, I ran into some John Masters organic pomade which is right up there as well.

I use a combination of 1) American Crew Grooming Cream or Pomade and 2) American Crew Fiber. The grooming cream or pomade I apply first and work it through my hair thoroughly and then I comb or brush my hair into place. Then I apply the fiber paste/wax with my fingers for additional hold without the heavy, greasy feel or look. I don't use a comb or brush after I apply the fiber paste/wax.... I just style with my hands. Cheaper alternatives to American Crew are Suave or Trendstarter products.... they both make the equivalent products to American Crew and I find the performance to be nearly equal for about half the price or less. I only buy American Crew stuff if I can get a good deal on it.... because I'm cheap.

I tried American Crew pomade, made it through half a tub, and busted the Layrite back out today. Not sure if I'll go back to the American Crew. I have fine yet thick hair, and the American Crew weighs it down it seems.

Does the American Crew Pomade wash out easily? Does it leave a residue if your head touches a couch pillow?

I have pretty coarse curly hair. Every gel I tried would all end up the same way at the end of the day flaking. My father is a Barber and told the only product that will ever hold my hair is Krew Comb. Krew Comb works really well and has a nice smell but it can be sticky and hard to wash out. A few months ago I discovered Layrite and have not gone back to Krew Comb since. I use the Super Hold it smells like vanilla and washes out easy the only issue i have is that it is expensive.

My hair is the same.... fine but thick. That's why I use the pomade or grooming cream in combination with the paste/fiber/wax (whatever you want to call it). What do you find is the biggest advantage to Layrite over the AC?

Mister, I find the Layrite has more hold, and doesn't weigh my hair down to my head. My hair is softer though with American Crew Pomade... more of a Brylcreme effect I suppose.

I find that AC Pomade washes out very easily. I've used Dax Wave & Groom and Sportin' Waves.... those are very difficult to wash out compared to AC Pomade. As far as leaving a residue, I think it depends more on how much you put in your hair. I usually have my day's worth of hair dressing in my hair when I go to sleep at night because I shower in the morning and I've never noticed my pillowcase turning greasy or brown. I'd say that I apply an average amount of product (finger tip's worth).... plus I apply about the same amount of the AC Fiber or Trendstarter Matte Finishing Wax after that. No problems with leaving a greasy trail.

Maybe I should try Layrite. I grew up using Brylcreem because it's what my dad used. It wasn't the right product for me. I would always end up putting way more than a "little dab" trying to get enough hold and it would end up having the same effect that you mention the American Crew Pomade having on you.
