What's new

what to do with coin collection?

I have a collection of about 200 or so world coins from probably 50 or so countries. Most are coins from the 70's and 80's that are now out of circulation. I have some older coins from early 1900's or even earlier like 1800's and maybe even 1700's, but there are also newer coins (from the 2000's). The collection is not well organized. I just put them in container that has small bins for organizing small objects.

I started the collection when I was a kid in the 70's and continued to add to it till about 10 years or so ago. I have lost interest in collecting and don't have any heirs to pass it on to.

How can I go about finding out if this collection is worth anything and/or what is the best way to sell it? I don't think I have the patience to go through the entire collection and find each coin in a database to see if it's a coin of significance. So ideally a solution where I can just sell the whole collection would be great.

Appraisers can evaluate the value of the collection, but they usually charge a fee.

You can take the entire collection to a pawn shop and see how much they think it's worth.

You can also put the collection, or individual coins, on eBay to see what they bring. You can put a reserve on the auction to set a minimum sale price.

I will say that, in general, US coins are what most collectors focus on and they tend to be the coins with the highest values.

Your best bet might be to google each coin and see if you can find some prices online.
or google "coin appraisal near me" or something similar. Maybe take them to an antique store. - - But I think most antique stores now are just consignment shops and the people working there are basically hostesses with no real clue about antiques (at least around here).

Good luck

I used to have a decent size collection. I still have a Canadian large cent collection and a few others.
I would look at sold items on eBay for some of your coins. If they are part silver, then they will have some value.
I really love the design of many world coins.

I had a relative out of state that inherited some and had no idea what to do. I brought them back here and took them to a local coin dealer who has literally been in business in town for fifty years. Eminently trustworthy. He went through a pile of them and it is all about condition, of course. So, frankly don't get your hopes up. They added up to a little something and there were three that were worth a bit more. Most were worth their weight in silver as they were so worn you could not make out the images on many of them. The goal was to divide up the total between the kids and they each got a few hundred bucks as I recall.

Looking at eBay, it looks like what I have may be worth $50-$100 if sold by weight or number of coins, without actually trying to figure out if there are any valuable ones.

I would not go on the "asking" price, but the "sold" prices. As with all things the two categories vary greatly.
You can always ask 120 and be content with an offer of 100?

As a side note I follow "Error Coins" errr ma gerd!!! I've seen people ask stupid ridiculous money for coins that look 98.9% like they been through a lawn mower. :crying:

I sold all my silver to a collector years ago. Turn-of-the-century domestic coins mostly. Nothing special. The gentleman I sold them to was known to me and I trusted him. His motivation was that someday he wanted to write an enormous book about his collection with photos. A collectors reference book. Some of his more rare coins were rated officially as the finest condition known to exist.

Obsolete junk at this point. Model 3 Performance is a better car in every way.
I have a bunch of foreign coins and some paper monies not worth anything I don't even know way I hang onto them.

Maybe they can be melted down and made into a beautiful straight razor.

And yes go M3 but might settle for 430i.

I've got a bunch of coins too, including Mint Proof Sets from 1999-2008, and a bunch of Ike dollars. Kids or grandkids will have to deal with them when I croak.

I also have about 5 boxes of Stephen King stuff (I can't use the more appropriate s-word here) from the 1980s, including first and limited editions, and rare items, some actually selling on ebay for $500-800. My plan for those were to visit my brothers-in-law in KY, use them for target practice, followed by an SK bonfire, all filmed and posted on YT. Covid, age, illness and death kinda put the kibosh on those plans.
