What's new

Anyone collect loose blades?

I see loose, unwrapped, and likely used DE and SE blades all the time on auction sites and at antique shows. Folks tell me the sell, which surprised me.

Anyone collect these?

Some portion of the razors I get have blades in them. I've been tossing them out, but it occurred to me that someone might want them. If that's you, I'd be happy to mail off an envelope full every once in a while.

I have a small album.

Would love to find a good way to store & display full boxes.

My motive for getting these has its origins in my microscope thread. People ask for pictures of other blades, so I started gathering more blades. I have about 75 current blades. But people also ask how they compare to older blades, and I'm also curious, particularly at the change in materials, processing, and coatings.

I do not and have no interest in collecting unwrapped blades.

wrapped, unused....sure! but I don't think i'm a collector as in browsing the web looking for blades.

I just like to keep 1 of every blade I use, and I keep them unused and in the original wrappers. I've probably got 30+

I agree, it seems weird. But I didn't want to insult someone's hobby. Although, if you collect used razor blades, you probably have a thick skin. *rimshot*

Oh well, I'll keep tossing them out. If someone wants them, just send me a message and I'd be happy to send them to a good home.

That's way cooler than my rubber banded bunch!

what kind and where did you get the "sheet protectors"? they sort of look like it was made for DE blades.

They're for old style tobacco trading cards
BCW Pro 20-Pocket Tobacco Page
e.g.: http://www.amazon.com/20-Twenty-Pages-20-Pocket-Tobacco/dp/B003A7JO20

There's also a 15 pocket page with deeper pockets, but they don't seem to hold onto blades any better. The blades aren't as secure (by friction) as cards would be--not with either page. I wouldn't keep treasures in either.

Was able to find this on eBay for about $10 shipped to Canada! Not Bad!
Although I like having full boxes a bit better... Don't know if I want to switch to singles.

Thanks for the info!

a lot cheaper than I thought they would be (amazon). That's the one I'd go with. Seriously considering it. I'm afraid with something to organize and put the blades in I'd be searching for more though.

I have a reasonable collection of vintage wrapped blades, like SiBurnings. The only unwrapped blades I have hung onto were examples the very first Gillette blades, circa ~1905ish

This. But even then it wouldn't be used. New 1905 Gillette in a frame motif kinda style appropriate for the shaving environment. Used? Never. Si burnings collection is cool.

I've seen quite a few razors in antique stores and at flea markets that are loaded with a blade ... can't tell you how much I hate to see this, and I always point it out to the vendor and ask them to remove it. They always thank me, but the blade is still there next time I look. They seem to think that including the blade makes it worth more, or something.

I bought one DE razor that actually had TWO blades loaded in it. An old Gillette and something called a Blue Marlin.

I've never received a razor from the BST that was loaded. I guess those of us in the hobby know what we're doing, and would no more send off a razor with a blade in it than we would give someone a loaded firearm.

As for collecting loose blades ... I don't know of anybody that does this. I still have that loose Blue Marlin, because it was unique, but all my other blades are still in wrappers. Better yet, in a sealed pack.

I wish I had a neat looking display system like SI Burning, though ... are those pages to hold a coin collection?

To answer the question, No.
Really never thought of collecting blades at all, wrapped or otherwise, but I must admit SiBurning's collection is way cool!!:001_cool:

That is most excellent.
