any tips for cleaning injector?

just got my first injector (type g) it has the expected soap scum as well as a rusty old blade (actually it looks like 2 blades jammed in there... i'm assuming it's one of the injector twin blades?)

any special concerns with cleaning products and the plastic handle?
any tips on removing the old blade?

Check this old thread for some information on the springs on this type of razor.

It's entirely possible that somebody jammed two whole blades in there, or it could be one of the twins. I recommend sticking an injector key into the head (to loosen it), and then pushing the blade(s) out with the tip of a jewelers screwdriver.

The consensus around here seems to be that if you try to open the spring on a type G you will deform it, and the razor will never close tightly again. Nevertheless, I have opened several of these by using a screwdriver to lift it past the tabs, and pushing it over to the left. This allowed me to scrub out a lot of gunk with a toothbrush. When I closed them, I had to tension the spring slightly on a couple, but they work fine, with the blade sitting securely. This may just have been sheer luck on my part. If you don't want to risk damaging your razor, a long soak in Scrubbin' Bubbles, and scrubbing all the parts you can reach, with a toothbrush, will probably make this sanitary enough. I haven't noticed any problems with Scrubbin' Bubbles affecting the plastic handles.

ok i managed to remove the blade... the head is a bit loose like the one in the thread you linked to... i may go ahead and move the spring to clean it this time

here's the blade that came out of it... kinda makes me want to get a tetanus shot just looking at it

AFAIK only the modern types (from L on) take twin blades?

Its my understanding that any injector razor made by Schick or Gillette could take a twin injector blade, even the earlier types. Although it is true that the twin blade system was marketed for the newer injectors in the late 70s and early 80s. As its been explained to me, it is only the PAL adjustable injector razor that will be ruined if loaded with a twin blade.

Anyway, the blade that has been taken out there is definitely one of the old twin ones.

As far as cleaning injectors goes, I have never really liked to bend stuff open. My advice would be to use scrubbing bubbles or soak the head in a water and bleach solution for a few hours and then scrub the head with a toothbrush.

A good soak in a strong solution of water and dish soap followed by some scrubbing with a toothbrush will take care of it. I soaked a really nasty G type in Scrubbing bubbles and it damaged the handle, left it with a white look. It was filthy but I don't think the white look was on it before the Scrubbing Bubbles, and it may have been an isolated occurance.

Also don't polish the gold plated ones very much because the plating is pretty thin on the old Schicks.

Taking the blade out of an injector means getting the next blade in is going to be a massive pain in the butt, be forewarned.

This varies. In general, I have not had any problem with it. Because I have a large rotation of injectors, I store them without a blade between shaves, and in any case, I've always removed any blade before the initial cleaning. It can be a little harder to get a blade in an empty one, but not all that much. Of course, some models may be harder than others.

well i did some initial cleaning and got most of the soap scum out and tightened the spring

maybe not the prettiest razor but for less than $5 i am not complaining as i didn't buy it to look at it
