Any product that *really works* for shine control?

Hey guys,

So I have a very oily T-Zone that becomes shiny pretty quick. I am looking for a "mattifying" and shine control product (moisturizer/gel/etc..) that WORKS.

I tried a whole bunch (can't remember the names), but none of them seem to do the job properly.

Any recommendations?

Dermalogica Mattifier +/or Shiseido Men anti-shine. I hear Clinique has a good one as well, but don't know much about it. They're pricey, but if you watch ebay you can get samples for not too much and see if they work for you.

Unfortunately this is one category where we have to take cues from the ladies...the products that work for them tend to be way ahead of products aimed at guys, which are often just regular products put in a black or grey bottle, labeled "for men" and given a higher price.

The only other thing I know is to look out for the rebound effect--some of the cleansers that are supposed to treat oily skin dry it out so much that the skin starts producing more oil than ever.

Hope this helps, good luck.

I used to use "Jack Black" (oil control or something like that), but they must have reformulated sometime in the last year and it actually makes the problem worse now.

I think the best remedy is either rinsing your face with water and pat drying or using a toner such as Dickinson Witch Hazel applied with a cosmetic pad.

To echo another comment, products that are really drying will cause your body to overcompensate and produce more oil. Your goal should be to find a product that gives your skin a proper balance. I had fairly oily skin, and have had really good luck with an Aveeno face wash product called Positively Radiant. I know it sounds pretty girly, but the stuff flat out works for me.

I use Origins Matte Scientist on my head to keep it from getting shiny. It works well for my head so it should be even better for keeping you face matte.

+1 on the Shiseido Men gel. It's a bit expensive but a little goes a long way. For me, it worked better than all the products I tried, including Jack Black Oil Control, Clarins anti-shine, and Cosmedicine mattifier.

I'll also add a little to scottb's post. When I was in my teens, I also used oil control/anti-acne cleansers and found out (the hard way) that they made my skin oilier and made the problems worse. If you don't do this already, try using a gentle face wash, like Cetaphil, at night before bed. In the morning, wash your face with water and apply a little of the anti-shine cream to your t zone. The logic is that you can cleanse without over-drying your skin, reducing the likelihood of your skin producing more oil in the day.

I use Dr. Bronner's all in one soap for face. I use one drop, diluted, and it cleared my face of oil. Granted, my face was a bit dry afterwards, but since I put on toner and face cream afterwards i don't really see it as a problem.
