What's new

Any Fans of the .225 Winchester?

The .225 is kind of an obscure cartridge That Winchester came out with, I believe in 1965, as a replacement for the .220 Swift. It just never caught on. There are still a few rifles out there chambered for it and a few rifles are custom chambered for it from time to time. Winchester still sells loads for it in only the 55 grain bullet. I have a Ruger #1 single shot varmint model that was once a .223 that was rechambered in .225. It is sub MOA all day long w/ just about any reload I put through it. I go to the local range just about once a week, so I think I will shoot it today.

BTW,
I love this forum. I am new to razor collecting and glad I found this forum. I usually go to several shooting forums, but have stopped going to them lately as they have become just too damn political w/ posters making some political comment in almost every post, even when not related to the topic being discussed. I don't think this forum is like that.

A fellow who was a member of the gun club to which I belonged when we lived in another town had a 1965 vintage Winchester Model 70 in .225 Winchester. While it didn't quite achieve .220 Swift velocity performance, it was right in there with the .22-250 with most handloads that we tried over my chronograph. He had a very accurate rifle and cartridge of which he was quite proud. Even the "post-64" Winchester 70 had the marvelous trigger for which Model 70s have been justly famous.

I'm a .220 Swift fan, myself. Generally shoot the Swift rifles with handloads "throttled back" to .22-250 velocities in the interest of preserving barrel life so am about in the .225 Winchester range. For hunting use or when playing with load development, the Swift rifles are occasionally run at "full-bore."
