Any cheaper brushes out there?

I am considering asking for a badger brush for my birthday in a few months. I have read the sticky post about the differences in brushes and have come to the conclusion that I would like a Beat Badger brush, medium knot size, but I don't know what size of loft, as I use both soaps and creams. My main concern is the price as I am a student, and my wife stays home with our daughter. Is there a cheaper priced (double digits), good quality brush that fits the description that I want? I know nothing about badger brushes and currenly use an Omega (10006?) boar brush.

Any insight would greatly help! Thanks! :)

You can get a medium Edwin Jagger Best Badger brush or a Rooney 3/1 Best Badger brush in the $35-$40 range. Some folks like the relatively inexpensive Tweezerman Badger brush, but I don't believe it is best badger.

There are a lot of sub-$100 brushes out there. You can even get a great deal on a Rooney 1/1 Super Silvertip from the T&H website. Read this thread for the discount details. 2nd post on page 2 of the thread (Post #22). That's the best deal I've ever seen for a 1/1, and it'll work great with soaps and creams. It may also be all the brush you'll ever need. It's generally accepted as one of the best brushes out there.

Stay with the boar.

An Omega boar with the plastic colored handle (10-15 USD) gets my vote...softens up after a few weeks of use and its rarely shed a hair.

I would suggest a 22mm brush.
I think that is a good brush diameter.

For loft size, I suggest you stick to the traditional shapes and sizes.
That will give you like 4 centimeters of loft and handle, or 5 cm both.

An example:

And indeed, that should be not too costly.
(the example is 43 euro).

About a month ago I bought an Edwin Jagger Best badger Ivory Urn brush from bestgoomingtools.com with a 23 mm knot. So far, it is one of the better buys I have made. I plan on writing a review after I have used it a little more. It only cost $59.95 US.

IMHO, badger is best.

Really getting falling for Boar now. Omega makes a nice set. Penworks has nice badger for great prices. Quality is excellent.

Unfortunately the best value in a starter badger brush was the Best Badger Brush form CrabTree & Evelyn at $35 US but sadly they've gone out of business. That same Edwin Jagger made brush can be found however at Duluth Trading Company for $39.95 with a drip stand:

Option 2, a style 3, size 1 Rooney in Pure Badger from Vintage Blades for $39.99:

For the money I'd judge the Jagger as the better value since it's 5 bucks cheaper and includes a stand.

In its defense, C&E is in Chapter 11, but the future is cloudy. I have one of their re-labeled Edwin Jagger brushes for $35.00 and it is excellent.

Another brush I like is from Superior Brush. Each and everyone is custom.

You will get a stand with the Rooney as well, and IMHO it will beat that Jagger hands down.

Agree 100%.

I totally hear you about being a student with a wife who works plenty hard just taking care of the home front. If your budget permits, I'd go with the Rooney or the EJ brushes. The Tweezerman's fine, but while some guys have great luck using them for a while, others don't; at that price, I might side with the boar recommendations. I'd probably line them up this way: Rooney >= EJ > Tweezerman.

WOW! Thanks for all the great info. I got the link for the Penworks site from my brother and I think I might get one of them. The others look great too. Thanks! I now have something to think about.
