Antique Shop Find! Now what do I do?

I went with my wife to a local antique shop looking for some DE's. I found just one, and two SE's. Purchased this for $5 and now I want to clean it. I looked on some other threads and they caution when using "gold" plating. The inscription says PAT. JAN 13, 1920, OTHER PATENTS PENDING.

I know it's beat up and scratched up, so I would like to know how I can clean it while maintaining the "gold" plating.

what i do is, scrub with white vinegar and toothbrush, then a quick soak in hot water and simple green, then scrub tooth brush, then 10min soak in barbacide, should work.

Personally I always put a vintage razor through an autoclave, but then my wife is a dentist and that does not present a problem for me. But if you have a good relationship with your dentist I would bet they would run it through for you, if you asked.

But then again that may be a bit of overkill, I have had to sit through a lot of OSHA meetings.......

Hehe, not easy to get an autoclave for me. I dont have dental insurance so I'm not really friendly with my dentist, I just go in once-twice a year for a cleaning. I think barbacide should be fine, 10min claims it kills HIV, Hepatitis, and its a a Fungicide as well.

You can simulate an autoclave with a stove-top pressure cooker. Available wherever small kitchen appliances are sold, starting around $20.

Besides, when you're not using it for razors ... you can cook with it.

Boil it 5 minutes Rolling Boil with a dash of vingar and salt.

thanks for all of the help...didn't have simple green, so I boiled it with some vinegar and water, scrubbed with a toothbrush, and it took a lot of the funky gunk off of the finish...it looked like it had oxidized a little...now all i need to do is work on the finish of the top and find some barbicide

You can. You can also check a local Beauty Supplier (one that has supplies for a salon).

Just go to a local Sally's Beauty Supply. They have a generic version which costs half as much as Barbicide, but they carry Barbicide, as well.

I have an Open Comb Ball Handled "New" just like this one. It by far my favorite all time razor. My Barbour gave me mine several years ago. Other than "Scrubbing Bubbles" there is not much you can do a far as cleaning. Barbicide is good and we all should soak our razors more.

I was at Sally's the other day looking at the *icides.

The generic I saw (forget the brand) was not nearly as concentrated as Barbicide. Mixed to the same 'kill' level, I didn't believe it was that much a bargain. I should mention that at this store we're talking a couple of bucks difference in price.

Luckily, they were blowing out bottles of 'Hospital Barbicide', so I ended up going with that.

So does the patent date (Jan 13, 1920) mean that's how old the thing is?

Nope. Thanks the patent date. They started manufacturing them around 1930 and used that handle design for a few years before moving to the common bar handle. The last of the NEW's were made in 1939.

I have plenty of Ethanol Absolute at work, I just soak in that and use it.
