What's new

Another Noob Question - What do I have here?

I did some stained glass repair for a friend of my parent's this weekend. She's retired and has always been good to me while growing up so I told her this one was on me and wasn't about to take a dime from her. From speaking with my mother, she knew that I had recently begun shaving with a DE razor. She gave me a bag of her husband's shaving stuff that she has been carrying around for years since he passed. In the bag were a couple straights which I know absolutely nothing about. Not sure if it would be a fun project to restore the British one, but honestly straight razors frighten me and I'm not sure I would ever use one.

Are they worthy of being used? How old are the straights? Would it even be worth selling the straights or should I just put them on a shelf for a few years until I decide what to do with them?

Here are a few pics of the overall lot and the two straights in question. Thanks for your patience and help on some commonly asked questions.

Regards,

Dale

wow looks like youve bagged yourself a wade&butcher but the hone wear is pretty excessive! The other razor tho is a prime candidate for a restore, looks like that should come up good as new with no bother at all.
Also have you thought about a restore on the brush?? Cant make out the name from the pic but looks like a little belter!

Thanks for the reply SP.

The brush is a Strong Set and is going to be a restore. Was looking at knots last night. I want to set my brother up with a kit for his birthday this summer and have that handle and an Ever Ready to re-do.

From what you are saying, the Wade and Butcher should be shelved? The W&B might be just right for me to try and rescale as it is worn and I won't be out much if I pooch it.

Where did you get the excessive hone wear on the W&B? To my eyes it looks nearly untouched since the grinder's wheel. same again with the other (can't quite make out what the trademark on that one is, GENCO Perhaps?)

To the OP, Both are in near perfect condition, I'd say they're approximately (give or take) 1920s-1940s, I've never seen a W&B in that shape before, but I suppose it did happen for their non-huge razors. You could get someone to run 'em over the stones, give a freshen up on the edge, and see how things run. Either you can sell them on to someone, or you can just Hang onto them til you get the nerve to at least try to shave with

Nice Score!
