Andrea Mitchell - Morning Joe comment

Well here is a nice quote by Andrea Mitchell. It's nice to see that there are smart people out there who are willing to look out the the stupid people like me who don't know what's best for themselves. How lucky we are to have people watching out for us.

"ANDREA MITCHELL: You've got 47% of the people in our NBC/Wall Street Journal opinion poll who have health insurance who don't like what the president is doing. The problem he's got -- 47% of the people who've got coverage don't want change. They don't like what they're hearing. Now, they may not know what's good for them, but the problem is that he always knew he was going to have to persuade people with insurance, that's the largest number, not the people without insurance, for expanded coverage. So they've got a real problem."

Yep Andrea "they" do have a real problem - there are smart people out there that do know what's best for themselves and their families. We don't need someone to think for us and tell us what we should think. He said with blood shooting out of my eyes!

Thanks for posting this quote. When I read about people not knowing what's good for them, do you know what it reminds me of? Wetshaving! That's right. Companies like Gillette keep forcing multiple blade razors on the consumer because they think that we don't know what's good for us. I, for one, know exactly what's good for me. That's why I shave with a DE razor. I've given some thought to straights, but I don't think that I want to make the outlay of cash that I know it will take to get me into it. For now, DE's are good enough.

What kind of razors do you have, Aodenkou? Right now, I've got a couple of vintage Gillettes, including one that's been in the family for a while. I also have a beautiful new Edwin Jagger and a neat little Feather TTO too. How about you?

If you'll forgive the expression, OMG!

I love wetshaving and a cuppa Morning Joe - of my homeroast that is. This morning it was a mix of Indonesia Flores and Brazil Moreninha.

I find this to be a much more relaxing way of getting my morning going than trying to see if I can work up an ulcer watching tv.

A month or so back I started with the Feather razor, picked up a slim, Merkur 36C, 1912 pocket, and just got a fatboy in the mail - waiting to run it through the autoclave before using it. Picked up AOS Sandlewood and some C&E, Proraso, Kiss my Face lime, a couple more - settled in on the Feather blade. Started using Alum blocks, and Witch Hazel, and found a nice Bay Rum.....

Worse yet I have started to make my own scuttles, lather bowls, and shaving mugs! Agggh what did I get myself into......

I'm a fan of the AoS Sandalwood myself, and I'm pretty much set on using Feathers too. I've had a Fatboy for a while, but for one reason or another I haven't used it too much. I just popped a new Feather into it and I've been shaving with it for the last week or so. I've been trying to work out the best way to adjust it for different passes and for different parts of my face. I feel like I'm about 80% of the way there.

That's pretty cool that you're making your own gear--how are you doing it?

It's true that some people just don't know what's good for them. The AoS Sandalwood soap and Edwin Jagger combo works best with IP (white box) blades. Hard to believe you could be so wrong.

I thought this was going to be a thread about coffee.

Speaking of coffee, I've been considering one of those "burr" grinders to replace my "blade" type.

Does it really make that much of a difference? I understand the principle behind having uniform granule size - but I have a hard time reconciling how much of a difference it would make, versus upgrading to a fresh-ground, fresh roasted Arabica.

Apparently, you may not know what's good for you.

Too bad Andrea Mitchell isn't in charge of these things. We wouldn't need to worry our silly little heads over all the choices we had. Andrea would (kindly, with empathy and caring) thrust upon us the one she considered right for us, having taxed us for it up front (with fairness foremost in mind).

It's also too bad there are so many other more important things to decide for us otherwise someone who does know what's good for us (and even for the rest of the planet) could get on this right away. Unfortunately it will probably take a while for things at this level to get rolled into the master plan. Change seem to go so slowly when there is so much hope in the air. I feel like a ten year old on the night before Christmas!

Of course our legislature will continue to be burdened with making these difficult choices on their own, without Andrea's help, as they sadly must do today for so many confusing things from retirement plans to health care. We should all thank them for their selfless sacrifices.

If the choice is burr grinder and supermarket beans vs. blade grinder and fresh beans, the latter wins. That said, this is B&B, so you'll eventually be upgrading to all of the above . In that spirit, I offer this thread. (Of course, the type of brewer you're using also makes a difference...)
