Been there. It is such a cramped, real place. Not a fancy-shmancy boutique. A place for real New Yorkers, working-class, to go to get their things. I loved that just out the front door, you turn your head a bit right, and the Empire State Building is not even a par five away.

I smell like a Christmas pudding
It is a bit overwhelming, isn't it? I walked out with a few assorted tucks, two of which I remember being the only Feather blades I ever tried, and some Treets. And some classic Cella aftershave.

I choked. I admit it. Total deer in the headlights.
The choice is amazing but I use mostly vintage stuff so was not really tempted, plus I was on a month long tour of the US and could not fit much in my luggage, especially after my wife had been shopping 😅 There were loads of grey box Simpson brushes which were hard to resist, but I ended up with a 100th Anniversary can of Barbasol, admittedly a difficult product to get in the UK, and I love it. When I use it I am reminded of a wonderful holiday my wife and I enjoyed, and the fantastic time we had in New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Francisco. I would not trade that can of Barbasol for any soap I own, not because of its albeit great performance, but because of the memories it evokes - you cannot put a price on that.

Now, if you have some time to spare, visit C.O. Bigelow Chemists.
(414 6th Ave, New York, NY 10011)

As far as I remember correctly, I must have visited them first some time in the late 1970s.
If Pasteur looks like a cash and carry, Bigelow has some old world charm, which includes a house cat that roams around in the place.

Bigelow is definitely worth visiting, if only to feast your eyes.

And what Bigelow is to New York, Merz Apothecary is to Chicago…
