American Safety Razor going bankrupt

Sad to say, ASR, the major manufacturer of SE razor blades, is being bought by Energizer, who hopes "to boost its disposable razor business." Those of us who use SE razors have real cause for concern.:cryin::shocked::frown1:

I don't think there is much cause for concern. ASR is one of the few manufactures of these type of blades for use in the Medical/ Lab industry. Someone needs to supply the needs of this industry.

Schick might sell that division off, but I can't see blade production ceasing altogether.

We might see the blades no longer sold in the likes of Walgreens though.

Some of the new Wilkinson Sword products being sold through Wal-Mart say the blades are made in the USA. Makes me wonder if the ASR plant was already making those blades on behalf of Wilkinson Sword; perhaps Schick buying ASR has been in the works for many many months.

That would be the ultimate in irony, as the loss of the contract with Wal-Mart is what caused ASR to go bankrupt in the first place.

ASR/Personna consumer blades might be in danger.
Wilkinson Sword is a subdivision of Energizer Co. (Everready batteries) and owns Schick. Since Wilkinson only manufactures blades in their own plant in Germany, then Wilkinson blades that are made in the USA are probably made by Schick.

Energizer purchased Wilkinson in late 2003 from Pfizer. Energizer then purchased Schick from S.C. Johnson (Johnson Wax) in late 2009 and rolled it into their Wilikinson subdivision.

Energizer is a very aggressive marketing company. Since Schick was already a major supplier to WalMart, they could probably cut a better business deal (and one less supplier to deal with) for WalMart than ASR/Personna could to supply blades.

It does make me wonder what is going to happen to all those ASR house branded razor blades that grocery and drugstores have been peddling.

It was at least a decade ago, but Schick was not totally averse to private label. I have some Kmart Injectors that are clearly made by Schick and not ASR. They have a barcoded box, full metal case (long after ASR switched to the plastic/metal one), and they use the Stem reference that Schick does rather than the Key reference of ASR.......
