I just got a Frank Shaving 28mm Best from B/S/T, and it blew away what I was expecting. About three of those brushes and you could build a new badger! It' a very soft, very dense, and holds warmth unlike anything I've experienced. It makes tons of thick lather, and it feels great in my hand. However, after using it the first time, it shed about 3-4 hairs. I used it again, and it lost another 5 or so hairs. I'm a face latherer, and I'm trying to take great care not to press too hard or scrub too vigorously. I'm soaking it in warm water for 5 minutes before using it. I'm ensuring that it' shaken out after use and hung upside-down. (Or maybe right side up, depending on how you look at it...) I read that it might be a good idea to very gently comb it, so I did that, and 15-20 hairs came out. Every time I've used it since, at least 5 hairs have come out, maybe two more times.
I don't know how much it was used before I acquired it. I don't know how it was cared for. The knot is very, very dense, so 50 hairs isn't going to make a bit of difference in anything. However, I fear that I'm doing something wrong. I've been using a Parker Pure Badger since July, and it's probably shed no more than 10 hairs total. And I was smashing it I to my face and whipping it around a bowl like a madman. From the same seller as the FS, I got three other badger brushes as part of the lot, and none of them seem to have shedding issues. I've been reading on the forums, and Frank Shaving doesn't seem to have a reputation as a shedder.
Is there some crucial step I'm neglecting? Is it possible that the previous owner just didn't use it enough to get out the initial shed hair? Am I a madman for running a comb through it? Or is this something that should just work itself out over a few more uses? Thanks in advance for any insight!
