Alum vs Witch Hazel

So I usually vary my post-shave depending on the mood I'm in. I mostly stick to my alum block, but if I want a little extra cooling, I'll use some Thayers on a cotton pad. I've been tempted to try both, but haven't because I'm not sure of the ramifications.

My question is will using both alum and WH dry out skin too much?

I use the Thayers to rinse off the alum, even in winter it doesn't seem to have an adverse reaction on my skin ..

Agreed..

I use a razor-rock and then the thayer's lavender witch hazel..

(and then the prorazo aftershave, the J&E shaving Balm, some Trumpers limes........... and so on and so on...
:blushing:)

I was doing the razor rock followed by witch hazel. My skin does not like the alum makes me itch really bad. Now i just do the witch hazel followed with a splash of clubman and it works great for me.

I only use witch hazel. If you are affraid of drying out your skin, just be sure to use an after shave balm afterwards.

Why not use both? Thayers Witch Hazel is very moisturizing, and you can feel the soapy glycerin on your face after applying it with a cotton pad / splash. Probably use the Alum first then use the witch hazel, cold water rinse, then AS balm / splash.

Actually, that's a great idea. I've been using a wet face cloth soaked in cold water, but using the witch hazel to clear off the alum is a great idea. Yet another step in my already complicated morning shave that is now begining to resemble the coronation of a monarch in complexity and ritual........

I use both. Alum block followed by Thayer's then AS & EdT\P.

Tried this for yesterday's shave. Worked great, and I'm not sure if it was this practice or my new Progress, but I was still at a DFS level this morning. One of the few times I did so well the day before that I didn't have anything to shave the next day! :thumbup1:

I use both as well. May not work for everybody but it's worth a try if you are curious.

I have switched over from alum block to the Theyers aftershave. Has enough alcohol for a slight sting and really cares for the skin. I then follow it up with an AS Splash with a dab of 444 mentholated balm.

Exactly what I do as well, minus the 444
