I recently picked up an alum bar at an Indian grocery store for about $1.29. I've started using it as part of my post-shave routine. I started using it without asking the basic question: What does it do for the pores/skin?
Another question is what is the difference between the $1.28 bar from the Indian grocer and the $15 bar from many shaving supply vendors? I noticed that the Indian version appears to have some impurities (discolorations) in it while the pictures from the shaving vendors look like the bar has consistent appearance throughout. I'm wondering if the price difference is due to the process used in producing the bar.
