I just ordered a pair of these http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonline/producti_SF6042_1_40000000001_-1 the Longbranch model in distressed gray. They also have the Dalton, which is a dressier model with similar styling also in gray only at the same price, $197. There is a code "honor" that will get a $35 discount if you agree to send "a gently used" pair to a charity.

Over at dappered.com, they review the McTavishes in grey. With the "honor" code they are $112.
I don't mind the look but I can't help but wonder where I would wear distressed grey shoes/boots

I would keep the Dalton's gray but I would be buying them to be strictly casual. The distressed Long Branch just doesn't hit home for me. I don't like buying new distressed stuff. Let it "patina" naturally lol

my biggest issue with odd color shoes is finding a belt that matches
The grey would be cool with jeans, I'm stuck between the Dalton and the Long Branch
I'd go Dalton due to the leather not being pre-worn
The price helped my decision, the Dalton from my local outlet store is $159, before trade in.
I think the McTavish's would be an easy match with a black belt, since the soles are black. You can always swap out laces too and match belt to the laces, I have some suede Cole Haan wingtips that I put red laces in and wear with a red belt

I figured the Longbranch for very casual wear, working around the house and yard.
+1. Or, depending on how "distressed" they are, never polish them. They might designed to be treated as a "knock around" pair.
