Aion Skincare Mallards

Given I had no initial interest as i'm totally back logged with soaps and splashes, I thought it was worth some discussion here on the latest drop from Aion Skincare (or the better known Grooming Dept) brand's latest drop of 10 soaps based on a revised Mallard formula- because I planned to buy 0 and somehow ended up with 5 tubs. This was a collection of 10 soaps and true to mallard form- gourmand scented soaps, although don't let that fool you- nothing food savory here, rather, tropical fruits, berries, and vanilla, and nutty/candy centric scent notes.

A few noted changes to this base- the texture is very different and thus one must keep an open mind and away from the hard puck is best belief- this soap is probably best scooped and bowl lathered. The post shave is pretty amazing- possibly the best there is. The consistency reminds me of dried out honey when you get to end of the jar. Half a teaspoon in a bowl and I swirl a decently wet brush around and it disappears into the brush like honey in a cup of tea, almost instant- no chunks of soap left to fiddle with. From there, I'll finish with a face lather. Alternatively, I've spread the product around my face with just my fingers and face lathered. Either works well, but advise against putting the brush in these tubs to load. The lather itself is very similar to Maxima- beautiful unctuous luxurious stuff.

The 4 scents I have- Tonka + backup, Fig, passion fruit, and pineapple. Tonka is goat contender for me so I bought a splash for it to extend the scent and a backup tub. I believe Pineapple and Passion fruit were also very popular. As usual, the scent quality of this brand's perfumery is always crystal clear and impeccable-never clouded with the stench of soap base. Mo always impresses me with the constant refinement and putting out the best wet shaving products and is only in this perpetual competition with one brand- but his own.

These are going to stockists at some point soon- Pasteur, TRC, and not sure who else. Worth being on the lookout for these.

Great report, Andrew. I might just have to get one of these when they hit the vendors.

I missed out on Mo's last offering, so can't wait for them to arrive in the UK at Slickboys. In your original post, you have the three which I would have chosen as well, Tonka, Fig & Pinapple Rum.

The fig scent is quite different than what i was expecting. Although my exposure to fig scents is somewhat limited, the ones i've tried in the past were "green" and sour-ish scented- more like a fig leaf, however, the fig scent in this mallard is more like a decadently sweet fig jam. It dries down beautifully. My favorites are Tonka and pineapple.

Thanks for the review. Of these, I have your bottom two, Pineapple Rum and Passion Fruit Mousse. I really liked Passion Fruit but was less impressed with Pineapple. Passion fruit reminded me of Passaflora (no surprise there) and I really enjoyed the scent. As to Pineapple, I only had an initial use so I will return to that one to see if I like it more the second time.

Would venture to guess the pineapple is the most straightforward scent of the ten, but you have to like pineapple. He did make it a more complex pineapple with the slight oak barrel accord. Passion fruit has some similarities with passiflora but this one leans more on the tropical side rather than the more green passiflora. Of the 4 I have I'd say tonka and passion fruit are the best

Expectations can be a harsh mistress. For the Pineapple Rum I was expecting something more overtly pineapple. I now think of this scent as more of a rum barrel accord with some pineapple lurking. With this in mind, my second use was a very pleasant revelation.

I gave coconut fig a chance but the scent wasn’t for me. I found the scent profile is more chocolate/cherry than fig. It reminded me of Mallard Chocolate from a few years ago, I really couldn’t detect fig in it but the scent profile is more complex than coconut and fig alone.

Tonka and Pineapple Rum sound more straight forward and true to their naming convention. I have heard the pineapple is the dominant note but haven’t tried it yet and probably won’t get a chance to.
