Aggressiveness: Gillette Tech vs Merkur HD?

I have a beard so I only shave my cheeks and neck. I've noticed that it is easier to see where the Merkur HD is shaving, around the curve of the beard on my cheeks, than on a Gillette Slim Adjustable or a Gillette Super Speed. This is no doubt due to the lower profile of the head on the HD, and it looks like the Tech would be similar in that regard. However, in general, I like the less aggressive nature of the Gillette razors compared to the HD. So after a long winded preface :001_cool:, how does the Tech compare to the HD? Thanks for any & all comments!

The Tech is a pretty mild razor. With proper angle I can give myself a comfortable very smooth shave. There are some who have said that where the Merkur punishes bad technique with razor burn, a Tech merely punishes you with a less close shave.

I have a Merkur 38C for comparison and I'd say that my Techs are definitely less aggressive.

I'd agree. The tech is VERY mild. I have both a Tech and a 34C HD. The HD is much heavier which also lends to its aggressiveness. And like he said, bad technique tends to lead to razor burn.

I totally agree with Chris on the Gillette Tech with a regular light handle. I did not like any of the light handles offered with the Gillette Tech models. After I purchased a custom stainless steel, heavy handle the results have been astounding. The weight of the handle on the Gillette Tech has made the razor a lot more aggressive and the shaves are super smooth, close and comfortable. I've also used it on the Merkur Tech head from the 38C and the results have also notched up quite a bit as far as a close shave.

Now that I purchased the Feather Portable razor in stainless steel, I will give that razor head a whirl on the heavy bulldog stainess handle to see how close the shaves are on a already aggressive Tech razor. Just my opinions of course.

Cheers.

Which handle do you have?

I had purchased the iKon Bulldog stainless steel handle from "superslab" back in the Fall. That handle has helped give me excellent shaves with all the Tech razor heads that I have. Now I curious to use it on the Feather Portable razor head which is also in stainless steel.

Interesting. One of the issues I had with the tech was that it was too light.

Based on what you're looking for, I think a Tech would fit the bill perfectly. They're relatively cheap on both B/S/T, and on ebay. I highly recommend picking one up, and giving the Tech a try!

There are several different versions of the Tech. I like the ball end tech because it has a little weight to it. The ball end tech is a brass razor with nickel plating. The fat handled tech and the aluminum techs are lighter.

...this because the fat handle is hollow.
