Against the grain on a DE? I always got bumps on cartridges

I've been double edge shaving for a while, and I never tried ATG because I have a pretty clear face and dont want the bumps I use to get from carts. Any techniques to try or something? Or how to get really smooth shave without atg? I use a Gillette 80's era black handle non-adjustable, anyone know the name of it? That's a lot to type everytime I post about it.

I didn't know my technique had a name, guess it was never my technique. Blade buffing. I figured some would be against it.

I always had terrible bumps, spots and ingrown hairs with a Mach 3. It must have been due to the 'lift & cut', because I've been doing ATG passes with a DE since the second or third shave and in 4 or 5 months I think I've only had a couple of spots.

Agreed. If anything, it clears you up. I have VERY bump prone skin. When I stated against the grain the bumps started to clear up even more, you know those last 2 stubborn ones that never seem to wanna clear up.

DE shaving done properley does not cause ingrown hairs or irritation.

Good skin stretching while doing a XTG pass for some does a good enough job of getting the shave nice and smooth, and more important, comfortable. I think comfort is the definitely the benchmark to shoot for, instead of BBS.

Give it a try sometime and see how it works out. I could never shave ATG with a cartridge razor but it's not a problem with a DE. If it is a problem, one bad shave is not the end of the world.

i find that I still get some ingrown hairs on the side of my neck and chin from time to time, but the DE is much better than the Mach I used to use. That said, the straight is even better.

I also used to get really bad razor bumps with cartridge shaving atg on the neck. I used bump patrol aftershave which works nicely for that. I eventually started shaving one pass wtg w/ my Gillette Sensor Excel and whatever canned goo I was using and would never get bumps.

I shaved atg for the first time in years with my Merkur Futur, and no bumps. I think it is all down to technique and cartridge razors tend to pull/lift and cut, while my DE just seems to slice through the hairs.
