Aftershave then cologne?

Hi Guys, I'm relatively new here but have constantly dealt with this problem.
I get out of a nice hot shower in the morning, have a nice shave, then I have a conundrum:

Apply aftershave and get that nice feeling?

Or apply cologne and have that long lasting good smell?

I apply cologne on my left wrist, and touch it to my right wrist and touch both wrists to my neck.
If I wake up early enough I'll do both and have a conflicting smell.

Is there some code I am simply ignoring here? Or how can I get the best of both worlds?

I use both. Aftershaving I'll apply the AS to the face and neck and while getting dressed will apply the cologne to my chest and wrists - normally two to the chest and one each on the wrists. If I apply any cologne to my neck it's usually to the back.

Do you have issues with the smells blending strangely? If only there were matched sets...

No.

But I've found aftershaves to be rather fleeting anyway. What type aftershave do you normally use?

And there are matching sets out there. A lot of cologne manufacturers make an aftershave version of a fragrance. However, these IME have normally been diluted versions of the cologne that have little or no inherent properties to benefit the skin.

Couple of drops of glycerine will fix that.

After all, that is the "secret" ingredient that gives aftershaves a benefit to your face

Example is Aqua Velva. Ingredents are SD Alcohol 40, water, fragrance, menthol (not in musk), blue and purple dye and Glycerine

I tend to use both. An aftershave does not have the sustained fragrance as a cologne and will wear off rather quickly. The cologne will hang in there longer, depending on it's strength. For an idea of what is strongest, here is the heirarchy:

- Perfume
- Eau du perfume
- Eau du toilette
- Eau du cologne
- Aftershave or splash

Perfumes are concentrated in their oil and aroma compounds, lasting much longer than other fragrance concentrations. Ideally, you should use an aftershave that is compatible (e.g. same line-up) as your cologne but that's not alway feasible.

I use both, and in the case of an AS that does tend to stick around I'll use a complimenting cologne. If my cologne for the day has no AS that plays well, then I stick to plain witch hazel for that day's AS.

You should have no problem finding a matched set. As one example: Caswell & Massey has a lot of aftershave/ cologne/ soap & talcum powder sets.

Caswell & Massey needs to improve their website, however, as a search does not always turn up all they have to offer. The ideal thing would be for you to visit one of their stores.

Great! Fragrance hunting has always proven difficult for me. I've settled on some True Religion flavor and Dolce & Gabana's blue (don't judge, I picked it based on the women joining me, not the label :p)

I currently use Aqua Velva ice blue.

I used that this morning actually and paired it with Floris JF. Went well together.

AV is a cool scent. Maybe look at colognes that have a similar coolness, such as Cool Water or Nautica Voyage

If you like spice for example: I have some Family Dollar Ivy Club Spice aftershave right now ($1.65). I'm thinking of pairing it with some Mama Bear Aged spice cologne ($14.99), and an Old Spice Classic Deo (round shape) that I got on sale at Kroger. All taken care of for under $20. You can get the round shaped OS Deo at CVS also last time I looked, and it's got a pretty intense smell.

Following a shave, I apply:

1. Thayer's Witch Hazel;
2. Jason's Aloe Vera Gel; and
3. Moisturizer.

FYI - Aftershave and Cologne are applied to 2 different locations; aftershave is applied to the face while EdT or cologne is applied to the pulse points.

Where specifically?
Maybe I'm doing it wrong (it's totally possible).
I apply cologne on my wrists and the two pulse points on my neck. I feel the neck pulse points cross a little with the aftershave on face and is a little funky.

Perhaps I should just go for complimentary aftershaves right now.

Buy a good quality cologne that works well with your skin chemistry. That is to say, don't buy a cologne that smells good in the bottle. Buy a cologne that smells good after it has been sprayed on your skin and left there for a few moments to cool.

The second step is to apply the cologne on your naked body. Never spry cologne on your cloths because it may stain and ruin your garments.

Use light sprays or just a few drops on the following areas:

1. Behind your ears
2. On your Adam's Apple
3. On the inside of your elbow joints
4. On the inside of your wrists
5. On your belly button
6. In the small of your back
7. On the back of your knees
8. On your ankles

Wait until the fragrance cools on your skin before getting dressed.

Also note that after a while when you stop smelling the fragrance it doesn't mean that the cologne has faded away. It only means that your brain has gotten used to the smell and it isn't registering it. Others still can smell it.
