AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry announced via his Twitter page yesterday that despite Steven Tyler's apparent departure, "AEROSMITH is definitely NOT breaking up." Perry also reassured fans that the remaining four members of AEROSMITH would seek out a new singer while Tyler did "his own thing."

"AEROSMITH is positively looking for a new singer to work with. You just can't take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin!" Perry wrote. "Band is playing hotter than ever and our songs need to be played live! Don't despair; AEROSMITH not splitting up. Promise that's the last you'll hear from me on the subject till we gear up again."

Perry told the Las Vegas Sun on Friday (November 6) that Tyler has quit the band he co-founded nearly 40 years ago, following a recent concert in Abu Dhabi. Perry revealed to the newspaper, "Steven quit as far as I can tell. I don't know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don't know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know."

Tyler told Classic Rock magazine following the Middle East concert that he intended to work on "Brand Tyler" instead of a new AEROSMITH record for the foreseeable future, saying, "I don't know what I'm doing yet, but it's definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself — Brand Tyler."

Perry told the Sun that Tyler "has had no contact" with him or the other band members. Classic Rock reported that Tyler's dressing room at the Abu Dhabi gig was distant from the others, and that he did not interact with the rest of the group until they got onstage.

Perry said that he would like AEROSMITH to continue, but admitted that he's not entirely sure how to proceed. He explained, "As far as replacing Steve, it's not just about that, it's also four guys that play extremely well together, and I'm not going to see that go to waste. I really don't know what path it's going to take at this point, but we'll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we'll be able to . . . move the vibe up a notch."

Things have been tense in the AEROSMITH camp since early August, when a fall from a stage in South Dakota broke Tyler's shoulder and ended the band's summer tour. In the months since, internal strife has come to the surface, forcing AEROSMITH to consider two options: going on hiatus or getting a new vocalist.

Perry told the Sun that he believed Tyler had been planning to leave for a while, saying, "Obviously he hasn't been giving 100 percent to this thing for a long time . . . To disregard his brothers to the point where we have to find out about it on the Internet — it's like, 'See you later, Bud.' I still care for him as a person, or at least the person I used to know. But things change."

Interesting.

Sounds like Tyler will go the Mick Jagger route and try to put together a crappy solo career. Maybe we can expect a series of dismal cover albums like the stuff that Rod Stewart releases every now and then.

IMO, Aerosmith's creative prowess ended in the 80s. Some of their songs from the 90s are good, but I don't think they've had a consistently good album since Pump. Even if the band members start doing solo projects, people are never going to embrace those at any level that rivals Aerosmith.

I have to agree with this.

How are they going to find another anorexic heroin addict to sing "Walk This Way" with RUN DMC on VH1s Unplugged? I will lose sleep tonight my friends.:scared:

The Jagger part is what immediately came to mind. I agree with you about the quality of Rod Stewart's latest work, if one can call that work.

I think that Perry is underrated as a player. Maybe this will be good for him and the rest of the band. I do not think they have done anything interesting for over a decade. I think his loyalty to the band is admirable. On the other hand, I think Perry has done solo albums.

I am impressed! Morrisey and Crowded House concerts in the same year. Elvis coming to mind as great 1970s music.

Really he should at least contact them and say "Hey, I'm out." or "I would like to work on my own stuff for a while but I'm not quitting." He really should say something! Maybe there's just enough bad blood between them that he doesn't want to. Maybe he has his reasons.

(Off Topic) I also think it's odd what happened to Dan Nelson and Anthrax. I read some interviews that appeared as if John Bush might rejoin the band and I was really hoping he wouldn't. He had this one interview in which he said after he quit because he didn't want perform with Joey Belladonna during the classic lineup reunion tour he wouldn't rejoin because it would be like going back with his tail between his legs, and I see what he means. Although, I think he was the best vocalist Anthrax ever had, I hope he just keeps on with Armored Saint. (Ok, resume topic)

They haven't put out a good album since they went to rehab after "Done With Mirrors". They were overdue to retire. Someone tell Joe not to bother looking for another frontman...

ETA: I'm a big fan of their earlier stuff!

First of all Aerosmith without Steven Tyler isn't Aerosmith at all.

Second, I agree with TimmyB though, these guys are in their 60's its time to just retire.

Loved them in the 70's...really one of the better American bands IMO. Saw them live in that period and have never seen a band more messed up on drugs or what have you live in concert. Tyler was falling into the audience and the rest of the band was simply so out of time....hell just out of it! The audience didn't seem to care much though...everyone there was in it for the party....especially the band. I agree they have been at it long enough...40 years...why push it any more? Money?

Aerosmith seems to generate strong opinions. I am not sure I feel strongly in any respect. I thought they did good work early and in the 90s. I think they could do good work again. Always room for additional good music unless it is zero sum. I suppose one could argue that the Stones should have kept it folded up pre Steel Wheels. I would not.

The thing I always liked about the group and ST in particular was his emphasis that his and JP's "lives were saved by rock and roll."

Who knows what goes on behind the scenes? Who knows just how damaged these guys were by or before the massive drug use? If ST is back on the needle or the pipe, that explains a lot.

Tis sport to observe.
