Advice please!

Hi folks,

I'm just about to re-knot 3 brushes (my first attempt!). The knot height is 7mm and the hair is 57mm tall. The question is: Do I have the top of the knot flush with the top of the handle, or do I sink it down further?

Many thanks in advance!

I have only done a couple and others will chime in here. You set it to where you want it so it has the backbone you desire.
My first one I did not set deep enough and ended up too floppy. I prefer a nice backbone so set mine deeper.

If at all possible, I would try it at a certain depth, make sure you like it before you glue it.

Thanks Bowhnter! It's boar so it should still have a good bit of backbone. I'll post some pics up when they're done...thanks again!

Update: I've restored one brush (was my grandad's). It came out really well! I'm now working on a 'Made Rite' brush. As before, I used a Dremmel (type) to remove the knot from the handle, but this time I've had to take a break....the smell of the burning badger hair is AWFUL!!!!!

You set it to 57mm loft? the hair sticking above the handle? How big is the knot? I would shoot more for like 50mm.

Oops...too late! They are quite stiff brushes (at the moment anyway). I don't think they could get floppier than my badger brush...lol Just hope they don't fall apart!

nice work, haven't seen that type of handle on the left before!

I haven't got a clue what it is - it was my grandad's brush....it's been around as long as I can remember. I've used it for about 35 years (albeit for the last 25 with bathroom soap or canned goo...until I 'saw the light'), and he had it long before that. It wasn't in great condition when I pinched it off him (laughs) and until today it was looking quite sad.. It looks a lot happier now!

Look on the bottom of the blue and white. I have an identical black and white one that is an old Vulfix.

Hi Blondie,

Just checked...no identifying marks at all. Could you post a pic up? It'd be interesting to compare as I have no idea of the origin of this brush.

Looking good, I like the one on the left. Are those boar or badger? The picture looks funny on my screen.

Cheers hig',

I think both brushes may have originally been badger, but now they are now kitted out with boar. I have a really nice badger brush (well soft) and a bristle brush (well scritchy but good)... I'm hoping these knots will hit the 'middle-ground'.

Oh okay got ya. I thought you were setting badger knots, I must have missed that earlier, I have never set boar knots but I don't think they will be floppy. Nice job on them let us know how they work out.

After less than a week the brush has improved immensely. It's fanning out quite nicely, getting much smoother and is a pleasure to use. I'm actually preferring it to my badger!
