Advice needed on point and shoot

I need a cheap point and shoot, but I really don't understand photography at all.
The only thing I'd really like to make sure I get is the ability to take wide angle family shots. We've usually got 30 or more at Thanksgiving, so say 3 rows of 10 people.
Also, I'm guessing that 5x optical zoom is much better than 3x, right?
Can you gents suggest a camera like this that sells for around $100?

Thanks.

kenrockwell.com will give you all you need to know. great reviews.

I went with a canon s90, but I'm guessing that may be more than you want to spend.

Any of the Canon Powershot A series should fit the bill. They are dead simple to use, they have some compelling features for their price point, and they take great images.
The next step up would the the Digital Elph S series, these are also great cameras with solid construction. I would go to a local store to get a feel for the camera and test it out before buying.
Amazon has great prices on most models.

The one thing I have to say is about the zoom. I really hate recommending cameras to people but I noticed you mentioned zoom so I have to say this. When comparing models, ignore the digital zoom numbers. Camera manufacturers love to talk about this number and it's really meaningless. You can do the same thing with any basic photo editing software. Look at the optical zoom number. Yes, 5x would be better than 3x. It basically means you can make the subject 3 or 5 times closer in the picture. Other than that, go look at some, see how they feel, play with the controls, and find one that feels good.
