Adjust up or down with each pass?

I see that most folk commonly start their shave with an adjustable set higher and adjust down on subsequent pass(s).Recently I saw it recommended that the opposite be done. Can anybody weigh in on this?

i am almost certain that most vintage adjustable recommended starting with a lower setting and working your way up with the passes.
i start on 2 and move up to 3-4 on subsequent passes on my Progress. However, most times, i just leave it on 2.

Do whatever works for you. Some pick just one setting and stick with it for all passes. Some pick one setting for different parts of the face or neck and stick with that for each pass. Some start with a lower setting and increase the setting with each pass (which is what I do). Some start with a higher setting and go lower with each pass.

In brief, there is NO correct way to use an adjustable - just what works for you. That, to me, is the beauty of the adjustable razor: you can be as flexible as you want.

I start a new blade at a low setting and when the blade mellows I turn my Slim up one setting at the time. In this way I can enjoy the closeness when the blade dulls!

I used to start low and go up. Recently I have been doing N-S (technically the easiest pass for me as far as angle and control) at 3 on the Futur or Progress, then dialing down to 1 for the XTG and ATG passes. Blade buffing is easier on a low setting.

Some additional techniques to consider. That's the beauty of adjustable razors. They give you the most flexibility. Now if there were a SE non-injector razor that is adjustable.

Thanks all. I haven't tried either method. Been keeping it at 1.5 on the Futur. Really love that razor and now I understand what they mean by it "singing".

When I first started using an adjustable I adjusted down but now I always leave it on 5 for all passes.

I just got a '59 Fatboy and have been playing with different settings. This morning, I did the first pass WTG at 9 and the second pass XTG at 5. This did a very good job, and I finished up with some gentle buffing ATG with the razor set at 2. One of the best shaves I've ever had.

Notes: blade was a brand-new Astra SP, soap was bowl-lathered TOBS Sandlewood, brush was a Walmart-acquired VDH Boar, alum, Nivea Sensitive balm, Pinaud Clubman AS.
