Above the Tie Rhodium Razor Question

Do any of you have any kind of experience with Above the Tie's replated/restored razors? I'm in the market for a 40's style Super Speed with the intention of having it replated in rhodium. I'd planned to grab the razor from either the BST or the 'Bay and send it off to one of the usual suspects for the rhodium coat (you know, the ones recommended on every single replating thread posted for the last three years). That said, I noticed that ATT has a few fully restored and replated Z-1 models from the very end of that style's production run for sale in their store. They're currently priced at $90 plus shipping (so $95.80 to my front door). Am I crazy to think that's actually a really great price? I mean the Rhodium plating itself seems to run between $80 and $95 dollars at all of the bigger shops, and then there's the cost of a razor that's in good shape. Add in the shipping (which would be about triple the price once all of this is said and done) and the waiting (weeks to months, depending on the vendor) and it almost seems too good to be true. What am I missing here?

It is totally none of my business but why rhodium for it? I know here in the Uk its around £65 for a rhodium replate, which is great but i wouldn't spend that on a razor like a superspeed etc more one of the higher end razors :) To me its alot of money invested :)

But onotoman who is a member on this forum does a fine rhodium job :) Although you might be cheaper getting in the US :) Maybe they have alot of them for sale and want to get rid of some inventory? :)

If you can find the rhodium plated razor on Stan's site (Above the Tie) then you are probably ahead to get it for the $95 shipped rather than trying to find one and sending it to him to have it replated. His standard wait time is around 6 to 8 weeks and the cost to do the rhodium replate is not much less than the $90 for the razor on the website. You would probably pay about the same amount either way.... but without the wait if he has what you want on his website. Either way, his quality is top notch. I've had three razors replated in rhodium by Stan... one of them a 40's style Super Speed. They all turned out great.

That's a fair question, Peter, and one I expected to have to answer very quickly. The reason for the rhodium replate on this particular razor is pretty simple. I've always loved the look of the 40s SS. I know they aren't as stylish as the Aristocrat, Fatboy, President, or Senator, but something about them grabs me. I guess it's the simple, unadorned look of it. It just feels like a proper tool to me, but one that's not without its own aesthetic charms. As for the rhodium vs nickel issue, I prefer the brightness of the rhodium to the other available options. I totally get your pricing point, though, and it's one I considered pretty seriously. Still, this particular razor is almost as cheap as a quality nickel job on the same model once I've added up the price of the razor, the plating job, and all of the shipping costs. Hence my concern/confusion...

That was my thought. Hell, I'm probably close to even vs. buying my own and doing the thing in nickel at that price point. Glad to hear Stan's work is top notch, though. That really puts me at ease. Thanks for the feedback, Ben!

Go for it :D They are well built razors that will last another 60+ years :) I have a milord and a 50s style superspeed and they both shave superbly :)

As you can see, mostly every member says go for it.....he is a great standing B&B'er Vendor with a reputation that precedes him.

Another nice thing about buying one Stan already has replated and is for sale on his website is that (as you can see in Alex's post above) Stan takes very nice close up photos of the razors he sells.... so you get to see exactly what you are getting. Stan does wonderful work, but even the best replater can only do so much with a razor that's a little wore down. Seeing one that is already done takes the question marks out of the question "Is the razor I am sending him a good candidate for a replate and will it turn out nearly flawless?". With the photos on Stan's website, you can tell just how flawed/flawless it is. But, look at the photo.... you can tell that Stan does not sell sub-par quality vintage razors.

Hey man, i say go for it.

I'm just waiting for them to get some 1983 Super adjustables, so that i can get one.

I haven't purchased a replated razor from Stan yet, but I wouldn't hesitate. I bought my birth year razor from him, a 66' super speed, and while not replated it was in excellent condition for a razor pushing 50 years old. I've seen several razors I've thought of buying from him, and I'm sure I will in the future. I received excellent service from him.

Aww hell. If the super speed I bought is pushing 50 years old that means I am too. Damn, am I the only one who never thought they would be 50?

Good news, gents. That was the easiest $95.80 I've ever spent.

Darn just saw this thread. I got one for $50. Pm me. Joke. Give us picks when it arrives & review as it looks sharp! Like you, I too love the look of rhodium on my Toggle. Something about rhodium.
