What's new

a little accident

I dropped the brush in the sink the other day, now I've got these nasty cracks and the brush [which is new] sheds a lot all of a sudden... Can the cracks affect the knot and what would be the recommended action? $IMG-20130917-00048.jpg

Wow! That must have been one heck of a drop. I suppose it's possible that the epoxy sealing the knot cracked also which would cause hairs to start coming out of the knot.

I would say a new handle is in order. You will probably be able to salvage the knot and transplant it into another handle.

I suspect that Foyle's correct. I'm not sure there's much you can do to salvage the handle beyond spreading some epoxy into the cracks, clamping it snugly until the epoxy cures, and then see if it holds and the shedding stops. Alternatively, if you like the knot, with care you may be able to remove the broken handle from it and epoxy the knot in a new handle. You can find reasonably priced handles at whippeddog.com and thegoldennib.com. Whatever you decide, good luck!

What brush is that?

You can get a new handle for $12 shipped from Whipped Dog and then just glue it in. The shedding is concerning...

If the crack carried into the knot base then both the handle and the knot are finished.

I would be more in line to obtain a new brush because if the handle cracked and the hairs were not shedding, then removing the old handle from the knot and transplanting into a new handle would be a good choice. If the knot is shedding that is not a good action to take because you will waste a new handle trying to salvage a damaged knot.

If the brush is new I'd contact the vendor you got it from first, and see if they can offer any help. Its possible they could replace it for you. If that doesn't work try contacting the manufacturer and see what they might do. Its worth trying this, and you just might get it taken care of.

I recently saw something on here where Rudy Vey did a hell of a repair on a brush which was much more badly damaged than that one. I guess it depends on whether there is any sentimental value to it. New brushes are many times cheaper than a fix.

I don't think that's normal for a new brush. It sounds like a manufacturing defect. I've dropped my brush in the sink before and it withstood the fall. Looks like a Simpsons Chubby but I can't be sure. If you can produce the original receipt, I would contact Mark at Simpsons. That's not that far of a drop and it probably shouldn't have broke. Good Luck!!!

I really hope we hear back from Philuk soon. It does indeed look like a Chubby, NSmalls, and if so, it would make me wonder if it is from the defective, weak rod stock of several years ago that led to cracks in the upper shoulder of some brushes. Maybe the drop wasn't severe but just the straw that broke the camel's back. Even if the brush is several years old, I would think this is something Simpsons would be happy to make right. Let's hope for Philuk's sake it is a Simpsons because they will make it right.
