A DE tragedy

So I was cleaning up after my shave yesterday, and I knocked my Lord L6 off of the counter and now the head won`t screw on to the handle. It probably wouldn`t be a tragedy for the guys with cabinets full of razors, but it`s all I have as far as DE`s go and I`d rather not drop any money on disposables. Any suggestions on jimmy-rigging it to make it useable again?

I can get some pictures up later, but there really isn't anything to show. Everything looks normal, but when it fell and the head came off I'm pretty sure it was the threading that got messed up.

It is probably possible to correct the threads. It would just be a couple of minutes of work at any service station. The plating will not last this threatment though, but probably the plating is anyway destroyed if the threads are broken.

Word around the campfire is that there is this crazy guy in Japan offering a PIF for a Aluminum handle Tech in the GSD...:wink2:

depending on exactly what happened to the threads, you may be able to run a tap/die over it and resolve the issue. You can get a set at any hardware store. Just make sure you determine if it's metric or not first. :)

...or if the threads are not buggered up badly, a nut with the same thread/pitch run over the threaded section will work well.

" All American razors have a 10-32 thread size. Most European razors are M5 metric".
However....this is NOT a hard/fast rule.

I got this from an earlier post-
"My Gillette and Weber Bulldog handles (presumably all 10-32) do not fit my EJ (M5) head, but the EJ handle (M5) fits all my Gillette and Merkur heads (presumably all 10-32). The Merkurs, although European, appear to use 10-32 threads"

Simple to figure out for about .50, buy one of each size nut.

And thanks for all of the suggestions, much appreciated. After playing around with it I found out the head still attaches to the handle if there's no blade in it, going to see if a friend can remove the excess on the handle in between where the threads meet. Forgot to take pictures but if you have the L6 I think you can see what I mean

I had several L-6's with that problem right out of the plastic. You were very lucky they didn't fall apart while you were shaving & give you a large gash. I was able to sand some off the end of the handle & get them to screw together. My bad ones turned into the handle about a half turn before stopping, the good ones I received turned about 2 1/2 turns. Just a small amount off the end will make a big difference.

You could also wander into Sallys and get a cheap DE or shavette.

The most likely problem is that the threaded part of the handle is bent. Before you let that give you any ideas, I would warn you that bending it back straight is likely to crack or even break it. However, running a die down the threads might repair this just fine. Won't know until you try. But for a Lord L6 you didn't suffer such a tragic loss. Throw your name into the PIFs already mentioned. Look on ebay and BST for an inexpensive Tech. Upgrade to a vintage Super Adjustable, maybe? Try a straight? Think of the end of your L6 as the beginning of the rest of your life.

Also, there is a current B/S/T that has a couple inexpensive vintage DEs.

And let this be a lesson to you, everyone should have at least one backup razor. :biggrin1:
