A Bug or a Feature (Gillette Slim)

Hi all,

I have just purchased a seemingly in-excellent-condition Gillette Slim. Of course, I didn't shave once I knew the razor was on its way to me. I had to try it out right away. The Slim worked great for me and left my skin all tingly. No cuts, no nicks, no irritation. What an improvement over a disposable multi-blade razor. Well, James Bond wouldn't have used a lousy razor, right? :tongue_sm

Anyway, I noticed the blade edges are at different distance from the guard. Is that normal, or does my beautiful razor have a kink? Please see the picture below.

Cheers,
-Snick

Looks like your bar is bent - fairly common on TTO gillettes. Look at the four corners of the razor head, where there is a gap between the bar and the bottom of the door. You should notice at least one of them has a different gap than the others. You can also look at the bar straight on (from the shaving edge) and you should be able to see if it isn't straight. You can bend these up or down with a screw driver (or your hands) in one of the four holes on the middle plate of the head.

Hi Iakona,

Thank you for your diagnosis and advice. I could easily align the bars with the flat head screwdriver on my SAK.

Hi kjparker,

Yes, I did bend the bar with the large gap up. Otherwise I could probably slice prosciutto at a medium setting. :tongue_sm

The two pictures were not taken from the same side and not at the same setting. I just wanted to show that the blades were equally far from the bar.

Actually as weird as it sounds, I don't mind if there are different blade gaps from one side to the next on the Fatboy or Slim. Basically even though you have it on one setting, i.e. 4 for example, it's like you are getting two settings in one, so setting it on 4, one side might be 4, but the other could be like a 3 or 5 setting. So you could use the other side of the razor to get a more aggressive or milder shave compared to the other.

Hi polod,

What you say is correct, and that's why I was asking if the non-identical blade gaps were "a bug or a feature."
