What's new

6month str8 shaving report with pics

My first str8 was a Double Arrow, expertly honed by RupRazor. My second, a Dovo honed by Lynn. So I started out with sharp blades. Of course my technique was not as sharp. My first and only strop a 3" Latigo from Tony Miller. I purchased a silver tip badger brush from Muhle, a best badger, another best badger from B&B (my fave) , was given 3 boar brushes. I make my lather in a Georgetown scuttle. Use both creams and soaps, but lean a little towards the creams, but do ok with the soaps.

Starting out I was getting LOUSY shaves and lots a cuts. I used my DE which i started using in October 08 to do my chin for about the first month I guess. Gradually I started doing my whole face with the str8 about 3-4 out of 7 days each week. For the past 2 months I would say that I use the str8 6-7 days per week. I still take the DE on out of town trips. I still get nicks but haven't had to use the styptic for a long time.

Don't really know why I'm tellin you all this except maybe for encouragement to those who are just starting and still new enough to "not be sure" whether they want to continue. I would encourage all to stick with it. The str8 shave is getting better for me all the time. Oh ya, it does take time. Read some of the threads and you will learn that the basics can be learned in a year or 2 but the mastery comes later. I love the journey and CAN wait.

Oh, I also have learned to hone my razors. The first 2 were honed by masters, every other razor that I have has been honed by me. I have done major blade repair with the helpful advice of the honemeisters and generous members here and at B&B. I use a Dia-Sharp DMT-D6e 1200 xtra fine for bevel setting, a Norton 4/8k combo, Chinese 12k, and have a Belgian Coticule that I haven't figured out yet. I also use balsa strops with Diamond .5 and chrome ox .5.

Well thats about it. So here are the pics of my den (which I have not been able to use for 3 months, we had a house guest.) I'm sure glad I got it back and so is the wife cause I moved out of her B room. The razors are what I have kept and are all SR and in my 8 day rotation. I have had several more but have either given them away to new members or sold.

I love that cabinet! especially with the towel hanging on the rail

A small cabinet though can be restrictive, does having it full make you think "there is no room for another cream, so I will leave it for now and buy it when I have space"?

Yes, it sure is a money saver. I do have room under the sink tho for those "have to have" supplies.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm only at it 6 weeks and still can't get quite clean looking. Nevermind DFS, this is DPS (darn poor shave).

Nice den.

Nice shave den and collection of blades.

When you figure out that coti, PM me. I'll pull mine out of the closet (where it's been & will likely remain!) to try your method.

This is an amazing den for someone who started wet shaving October 2008 (at least that is how I interpreted it). I think I am heading the same path :blushing:

How was your transition from DE to straight? I also started with a Futur and have a straight on its way to me right now that I can't wait to get my hands on.

The transition was good but slow. I started using the straight on my cheeks and finished with the DE for a couple weeks. I gradually added more areas as I felt comfortable and not hacking my face too much. I would say for the first couple months I was adding more and more days on the str8 . I first did only the weekends. I still use my Futur maybe once a week, especially if I'm feeling a bit off in the AM. I have really found that my DE shaves have improved greatly since I have been shaving with the str8. I hardly ever get a nick now. So for me I would say the first couple weeks were hard. the next couple months were better but not really good, at about 6 months I'm starting to feel like I know what I'm doing. I'm looking forward to what my shave will be like at a year in.

Mark,

where can I get razor stands like the ones you have in this picture.

Angel

Angel, those are pipe holders. I purchased at antique and second hand stores. When looking for pipe stands I suggest taking a str8 razor with you. 2 reasons: The upper and lower parts of the stand come in differing dimensions, or distance from each other you don't want one the is too far apart. The other is that the hole sizes vary. I have had to drill the holes larger in one of those which required purchasing a special bit.

Mark. P.S. Around here I think I have paid $6-$8/ea. They did need some cleaning!
