30 shaves, and counting

Today marks my 30[SUP]th[/SUP] shave with a straight razor. I had serious doubts when I began, and wondered what I was getting into.

It was only January of this year that I started shaving with a DE. Before that it was carts and canned goo. As I was learning the DE, I wondered how I would ever keep with it. After all, I could get a great shave with my Sensor Excel in less than 5 minutes, and out the door. This new routine was taking more than 20 minutes…an eternity when you have to start a busy day. But I kept at it, and learned fairly quickly and with very little bloodshed…and it became my daily ritual, and I loved it.

Once I became comfortable with my DE, I became intrigued by straights…and started scouring the forum for advice, and tips and general knowledge. I bought a shave ready straight off the BST and jumped in.

The first shave wasn’t anything I could have expected. This razor sharp blade felt anything but as it grabbed and tugged at my stubble. What’s wrong with this? Why do people rave about this? But I followed everyone’s suggestions and kept at it. It was hit or miss at first, and till recently, I always finished with my DE for a close shave. I only cut myself once, when I lingered in one spot a little too long, but the bleeding stopped fairly quickly and I learned something valuable from it. But all these passes, and the irritation, arghh. By this time, my DE was the faster alternative…which made me chuckle to think back a few months.

Finally I got the hang of WTG, but XTG was just awful. So I made several WTG passes before I would even think of trying XTG (beard reduction…right?). Then one day, it wasn’t so bad. Then I tried ATG. No way…how do people do this? So many more passes WTG and XTG, and now I can get a reasonable ATG.

So today’s shave was pretty much a DFS, and I think I’m at that point where I can pretty much achieve a DFS or at least a SAS pretty regularly with minimal irritation with 4 to 6 passes. I seldom finish with the DE anymore. I have a long way to go, and I still enjoy my DE’s when I need to hurry in the morning (imagine that). But I’m going to keep at the straight for a while longer.

During this time, I bought a couple cheap razors off the bay, and a couple different stones, and now I’m learning to hone my own razors.

It’s so cool to think that I’m getting a decent shave from a razor that’s so very old, and it makes me think of the generations of men in my family that started their days like this.

But it’s only shaving, right? Sure…

Congrats on a nice milestone! So you at 30 straight shaves could go back to you at zero straight shaves and give one piece of advice, what would it be?

congrats man, giving me more motivation to keep going. I have only gotten about 3 shaves out of my SR going for my 4th tonight.

Wow...great question. I guess if I had to summarize with one statement, it's that this isn't like shaving with a DE or especially a cart. It takes focus, and the desire to learn and to stick with it. 30 shaves in, every day, and I'm just now beginning to see some improvement. You have to want this. And if you do, there's a ton of information available here to help you get started. But when you hit that sweet spot...wow!

Keep going! The feeling the first time you get that good shave with a straight is so satisfying! Some get it quicker than others from what I've read. I'm probably average, though I've heard others say it takes a hundred shaves. I think it all depends on your willingness and desire...and of course, a steady hand!

Thank you for sharing. I'm in the exact same boat but I have far less DE shaves under my belt and only a handful of straights. (I save that for the weekends when I have time). It is good to see that other people have the same frustrations and make their way out of it.

You and I are almost exactly alike. I started with a DE in January and about two months ago switched to a straight. I'm at shave number 28 and have to agree with virtually everything you said about the journey so far. Isn't it gratifying shaving with a straight (especially a vintage one)?

So today was shave #42. Since I first posted, I bought a new Dovo Special Tortoise...not professionally honed. First shave was awful. Honed it myself on a small coticule I won off ebay, then stopped. Next shave was noticeably better. Then I went back to the basics, and watched Chimensch's video for the hundredth time, but also read his post. He mentioned that he makes 5 passes: wtg, xtg, atg, xtg, and a final atg. So I tried it. I really paid attention to the angles...and what do you know...it was my best shave yet. That was 4 shaves ago, and each since that one has been just as good. Feeling a little better now about this journey!

5 passes? Didn't your face feel a bit irritated afterwards? I started with 4 passes in the beginning, then 3, then lately 2, and finally 3 again! lol
Still experimenting ;)

There's definitely some minor irritation with 5 passes, but I keep a very light touch, and always follow up wit witch hazel. But I was never satified with the end result of fewer passes. I want as close a shave as I can get, and with fewer passes, I felt I was compensating by pressing harder...so actually was getting more irritation. I'm far from being comfortable with this whole process, but I can see the light.

Interesting, like I said I have also been experimenting a bit lately, and although 2-pass shaves seem to give me a nice, close and irritation-free shave, it seems I get better closeness from doing 3 passes. I may try again with 4-5 to see what happens, keeping in mind the light touch!

pmaster...now you've got me wondering...now that my technique is improving, can I go to a 3 pass shave, and keep the lighter touch, and be happy with the result? I think I'll give it a try tomorrow. One thing I've been noticing with this 5 pass method: my shaves are pretty much BBS on my cheeks, and more like a DFS on my neck and jaw line (still trying to find the right angles)...but my face really does feel smoother longer during the day. It's almost 6pm my time, that's 11 hours since my shave this morning...and I'm just now beginning to feel a light stubble in very small areas of my cheeks. I can get a BBS with my DE's pretty regularly...but they don't seem to last this long during the day. Logically I know that doesn't make much sense...my hair is growing at the same rate, and BBS must be the same whether it's from a straight or a DE, right? So how can a BBS with a straight seem to last longer than a BBS with a DE? Maybe I'm just wonkers...or just inhaling too much sandalwood!

Haha alright, you try 3 passes, and I try 4, maybe 5, and we compare notes! lol

All I got from your post is that I should succumb to the temptation and order myself some sandalwood soap which I've been wanting to try for a while! :-D

So this morning, I limited myself to just 3 passes; WTG, XTG and ATG. Not a bad shave, but still stubble in my trouble spots. No irritation at all. So since I like my shaves closer than this, I'll go back to more passes at least until my technique gets better. At least I know that I can get out the door more quickly, with a passable shave at 3 passes.

Its ok, you can admit it if you just want to do more passes because it allows you to shave longer, we've all been there. :-D
