20mm Finest fan in a 20mm hole?

Just making sure my handle with a 20mm hole will fit a 20mm Finest fan shape knot. I've read of going down by one size on the knot, but this one isn't marked extra stuffed so I wanted to make sure. This will be a face lathering brush so it will be set about 48-50mm. Thoughts? Thanks in advance, gents.

Mmmmm.... Usually it doesn't hurt to get one size down. They taper out quickly after the plug. I usually cheat and get two knots, one the size of the hole and one a size down, then try them both. But I always have a bunch of handles on the waiting list that can use the spare knot, so it will never go to waste. The loft will depend on how deep you make the hole. You can usually alter that more easily than the diameter.

Get the 20mm for the 20mm hole. 18mm will need heaps of stuffing around and won't look good IMO!

Two opposing views! I know to get the 18mm if it's an extra stuffed knot, but the Fan shape isn't marked as such. I'll wait to hear some more opinions before making my order.

FWIW, I just glued a 20 mm finest fan shape in a 22mm hole set at 42 mm loft. Originally, it had a 20mm opening in the handle and the knot would not fit. I had to use the dremel to open up the hole a bit.

42mm is a lot deeper than I'm planning on setting mine. Do you think if I were to set mine at 48mm, it would fit into the same size hole?

I'm not sure. I know that the plug for the knot I have did fit in the hole at 20mm. It was just that the knot itself splayed out and wouldn't allow me to lower the loft much without opening up the hole?

Do you have a dremel tool? If you do, I would order the 20 mm knot. If it doesn't fit, just open it up a little bit.

If you like I can take some pics. I also have a few other finest knots including a 18mm bulb set at 42 mm, a 22 mm bulb set at 52 mm and a 24 mm bulb set at 50 mm. All I have is my cell phone, but I'll snap a pic of them together for you in the next few minutes.

I don't think this handle would respond well to a dremel--not that I have one. It's made of plastic (I've attached a photo below).

A dremel works just fine on plastics. Matter of fact, it probably works best with plastics. Probably with a router bit or a sanding bit, that hole could be enlarged in less than 2 minutes with a dremel. It's a worthwhile investment.

I'm not sure if it's worth the extra time, effort, and money--I may just order the 18mm knot to be on the safe side.

EDIT: Apparently there isn't an 18mm fan shape... the plot thickens.

That's a pre-bloom pic of the 20 mm knot. I also agree that the dremel with a sanding drum would make quick work of the hole and allow you to set the knot you want in it.

Nice brushes!

Without a dremel, nor the skills to use one properly if I had it, I'll probably go with the 18mm bulb. Thanks for the info, all.

I put a 20mm fan shaped finest in a 20mm hole. It was a tight fit and I couldn't set the knot any lower than 48mm without enlarging the hole. I did have to run a dowel wrapped in sandpaper around the hole a couple of times.
I felt that the tight fit helped control the bloom and made it a better face latherer.

You REALLY need to keep the speed down w/a dremel on plastics. High-speed settings will melt the plastic and gum up your bit, and won't leave as clean of a hole. Sandpaper on a dowel would be a slower, more controlled way to get there with far less potential for damage.

How are you creating the hole in the handle black for the knot in the first place? Are you using a 20 mm Forstener bit to drill out the area to receive the knot?

I use scissors to cut the knot as close as possible to the handle and then use a grinding bit on the dremel to remove the knot. Once that is done, I use the sanding drum bit and clean up the hole.

I bought some 18mm knots for my 20mm handles and I didn't like the look at all as I couldn't put them deeping unless I used a drill (that I don't have). The solution was to get 20mm knots for my 20mm holes. They sit nicely and didn't move much without the glue. Once glued, nothing moved!

Can I ask what your source for handles are? I was thinking of getting some acrylic blanks locally and turning them, then using a Forstener bit to excavate for the knot, test try, gently widen the aperature if needed, then glue with waterproof epoxy.
