1st attempt Pipe Rack Build

Here is my first attempt at building a pipe rack. Unfortunately I really need to buy some more tools. This was build with a drill press, hand saws an a dremel.

It needs to be disassembled, rough sanded, stained, fine sanded, and stained and finished.

Here is the rough cut.

(I need to buy a band saw and a lathe one of these days so I can really start to experiment.)

Nice start! I've been thinking of doing a custom pipe rack myself. I've done a nice 7 day rack for my straights, just need to find time to start yet another project!

Looks good! I have a guitar rack I made that looks almost like an upsized version of that, similar stain and everything.

If I can make a suggestion: use your drill as much as possible. The yokes for the pipe stems can be drilled out to make an arc, and then just 2 quick lines with the saw to cut out the slot for it. To make the Forstner holes look a little cleaner you could just drill right through. Work with your limitations and start making them part of the design. Lots of fun can be had with just hand tools, so I wouldn't be in a huge hurry to start a power tool acquisition disorder (and believe me that can get ugly c:)

Thanks for the suggestions. Definitely very helpful!

Only 4 positions?

I currently own 2 pipes. I have two on the way. Like many of you gentlemen, I have a pretty addictive personality. I still try to play mind games with myself, knowing it won't work. I figured, "If I've only got four slots, that will keep my PAD in check.". Silly.

Hopefully this rack will just be a trial run; practice for a much larger rack!

I bought a 6-position rack.
I had 7 pipes by the time it arrived.

I now own a 13-position rack with 8 pipes in it.

Remember... Tinskey Christmas pipes, Petersen St. Patrick's Day, and the B&B Brown Leaf LE group buys.
You can be quite conservative in your purchases and still add 3 pipes a year.

These three pipes are a definite for 2013.

This first rack that I made is pretty heavy. I chose oak and put rubber feet on the bottom for weight. I've got a Church Warden on the way and I wanted it to be able to smoothly hold it. Maybe this rack will eventually become my "Church Warden" rack?

Here is another rack. I need to start "measuring twice and cutting once". For some reason my measurements haven't been exact, but that's ok. I'm going for function, not perfection.

The oak is nicely weighted and stands ups well.

I need to start "measuring twice and cutting once".
I took wood shop in high school, and had that pounded in my head. As an aside, never anger a wood shop teacher. I was goofing around one day, which you don't do with power equipment, and found that wood shop teachers make the most wicked paddles.

LOL!

I'm not THAT good, but I know my way around most power tools and can make some decent items.
One of my favorites was an oak 4x10 speaker cabinet that matched my Carvin X-100 (copy of the original Mesa Boogie).
One of the guys at work was impressed with my variety of mediocre skills and commented that he would love to have a garage full of sweet tools, but he would end up making a cable access show called "This Old Spice Rack"
