What's new

1957 Flair Tip SS

Decided to grab my flair tip today and use it for the first time, actually the first time with a flair. I must say it was extremely enjoyable - DFS with two passes, smooth and no issues. It is definitely in my rotation from here on out. If you haven't had the opportunity to use one track one down, I gave like $7 bucks for it and it is worth every penny plus some.

An old friend of the family passed one on to me. Haven't shaved with it yet. How does it compare to the 40's SS (if you have one)

I am glad to hear it is so good.

I am looking to buy a birth year (1956) B-2.

I would also be curious as to how it compares to a 40's SS. My first DE shaves were last week with an early 1947 SS inherited from my father.

Flare tip shaves are about the same as 40s style until Gillette changed to a flatter dome head sometime after 1960.

1947 was a little different according to some folks.

My birth quarter / year is a 1955 Flair Tip (1st quarter). Every time it comes up in rotation I marvel at the great shave it delivers. I also have a 40's style SS; I don't think I could distinguish between the two in a blind shave except for the feel of the handle. Sometimes simple is better.

I have a 40's SS - it was actually my entrance razor into the DE world. IMHO the flair tip is smoother and shaves better. I hate to say more aggressive because it isn't compared to my new open comb or my 1917 OC, but it feels more so than the 40's SS. I think it just hits the sweet spot for me.
For the record it is a C4 date code - and daddy likes.

+1 to what Doug said. Both styles are very comfortable shaves. If I had to say which showed a bit more blade I would say the 40s style, but they are very close.

Produced in 1954 to 1957.... From 1954 (Z-1) until 1957 (C-4) they stayed the same. 1960's style SS were made from 1960 until 1966.

Here is the lower profile head design of 1960's Super Speed.
