$15,999 Pipe?

Are you freaking kidding me? $15,999 for THIS??
Where did this seller get that value? I mean honestly it is a piece of wood.
I can understand that pipes can go in the thousands, but almost 16grand? :scared:

Bo was one of, if not the best pipe craftsman of our lifetime. His attention to detail was unparalleled, and he only made a few pipes a year, those pieces started at $2,500. He died in 2006 and the prices on his pipes have been going up ever since. They're not just pipes they are functional art, just like a Lamborghini or a Frank L. Wright house.

Ah, I still find it fascinating that a pipe can go for 16grand. Just incredible.
Learn something new everyday.

I recently had a conversation with a pipe maker and a tobacco shop owner about this. They said that briar tobacco pipes are a "fad" for rich collectors in China. The Chinese collectors buy pipes in the $5,000 and up range and put them in fancy display cases never to be smoked.
Not really related to Bo's pipes, but I was always curious as to who buys those expensive pipes.

All due respect to the artisan, but there is no such thing as a $16k pipe, that's just insanity at its finest! It's a drop dead gorgeous pipe, but wow, that is too much. And did you see how much for shipping?!? Seriously, over $60 for shipping a pipe?

I completely understand this, but good god, I would never spend even a tenth of that...

I look at purchases like this as an investment. I'm trying to making money on an object. The object is irrelevant to the ability to sell it, down the road, and make money whether its a pipe, ridiculous price for a pocket knife, fountain pen or Carrol Shelby's personal cobra car that sold for 5.5 million recently. Plenty of ways to make money on objects. The key is to know what will increase in value over time. I don't know if these pipes fit that bill but Mr. Nordh is gone and no more will be made. If there's a market for these and the market value isn't inflated, it's highly possible these pipes will continue to increase in value over time, even at what we consider ridiculous prices.

tulip bulbs once sold for thousands upon thousands. then one day, people realized these were just flowers. the market crashed. some got rich, some lost everything. it was all about timing.

i'd hate to be the one holding a 16k pipe the day people realize,,, "its just a pipe"...

Notice its still for sale. You can ask for any number you want, actually selling it is a different matter entirely.

I honestly think auction sites put absurd numbers on things not to sell them, but just to get people to think the value is higher than it actually is. If you just checked Ebay for a Gillette SS, and they were all listed for $1000, then one was $200, if you did no more checking, then it would look like the $200 one was a steal.

Ever price shipping insurance on a $16k item? $60 is a bargain.

As to the "worth" of the pipe.... A Bugatti Veyron is "just a car"

has a pipe ever gotten you l@!D?

Good point!! Although it seems to be pretty hard to get your money out of the car and at least one person has resorted to this. ( although this was more of an insurance scam than anything ).

A couple of Nordh pipes sold for $30K and $40K plus recently.

They are collector grade pipes for the rich.

I am friends with one of Bo's old friends in Sweden (also a pipe maker) and he has a few Nordh's in his collection; he says that although perfectly engineered, none of them smoke all that great. :)

Aesthetically, I have yet to see anybody better than Bo.

For those that don't know Bo, he was confined to a wheelchair from a motorcycle accident.

Here is a great YouTube video of him in action...
