What's new

Musgo Real

I am pretty much a soap user, but I had to try this cream since it's cheap and has received so many good reviews.

It is easy to make a rich lather with a small amount of cream. The lanolin allows the razor to glide and (IMHO) create a very close shave. I find this soap especially effective with my Merkur HD slant.

The scent is acceptable - but I think there are many soaps out there with a much more pleasant scent (e.g., GFT Sandalwood).

Everything said - I would recommend this cream. :thumbup1:

All right, I tried Musgo and I would normally finish the tube before I would review it but I won't be able with this one... I did 5 shave and decided to end it there.

The main problem is the scent but I will get there. I will PIF my tube to another member. It seems that if you do not like Proraso shaving cream, Musgo is yours. In my case, it's the opposite, love Proraso but Musgo, I guess not. We had a discussion about the scent: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=745807

Price: This product is a bit expensive down under but, there are similar product with a similar price. A tube of Proraso goes for half the price here.

Quality: Now, it's there, that's a good quality product that works very well.

Scent: This is were it stops for me. I try to find the scent even if I didn't like it much. I can't really get my finger on it. The scent is unique. I would describe it as Green plant (but not the same as Proraso White), 'Clean', earthy and fresh. I found it a bit 'medicinal' and 'artificial'. I think I was expecting something a bit more soapy...

Latherability: This was not a problem, easy to work with, great lather, maybe even better than Proraso but not by much.

Efficacity: Yup, this stuff delivers

Moisturizing Properties: Good glide, skin feels good afterwards.

Packaging: Simple tube in a box, yup, that's good.

Hopefully, the new owner will like it better than me.

I don't really enjoy this product. Clearly a step below Prorasso in my opinion, more equivalent to products like Arko. This cream is not even in the same league as TOBS or T&H, let alone SMN which is the standard by which I judge all creams.

Am abit disappointed this cream didn't agree with me, left me dry and red after my shave. Don't think its the lanolin because MWF is my very favourite soap. Strangely enough taylors avacado had the very same effect on me and i've tried most of the other taylor creams with no problem. Also i've tried 15+ soaps and no real problems. Still have to admit great scent and is very easy to get a good thick lather.

Musgo Real is the most cushioning cream I own bar none its that simple. I use a straight so any weakness in this respect would be exposed pretty fast.

The price is fine, it would not stop me buying it, its just in comparison with many other creams its not that cheap.

The scent is very pleasant and unusual, I can't decide if its like grass or the forest in the morning. The lather is extremely thick and moisturising, you can get an amazingly close shave with no irritation.

The product contains witchhazel and lanolin, so it both calms the skin and moisturizes incredibly well. Frequently when I use this cream and finish up shaving I notice I get very little burn with my AS.

Overall, I don't have much to add to the other fine posts here. Everyone should try this product would be my final thoughts.

I am writing this review not so much for the product per se, as for the company's service.

The cream is really excellent, and with a heavenly scent which can really make your day in the morning.

The pre-shaving soap that I also tried is equally good.

So, when I placed my second on-line order with the company (the company is Claus Porto, and Musgo Real is one of their brand names) I was disappointed at first, and shocked afterwards, with their service AND behavior.

When I first placed the order, about three weeks passed without any progress, although I sent 3 e-mails to their on-line sales electronic address.

After my third e-mail, a certain Mrs Catarina Carvalho, that seems to be the person in charge of on-line sales, apologized for a "misplacement" of my first order due to a problem with their system, and asked me to confirm it, so that it would be processed correctly. I did as asked, and was given a code so as to track my order through their courier company.

I had asked for the goods to be delivered to my office, giving very clear instructions as to the specific office, hours of my presence there (the usual office hours) and my mobile number, so that i could b reached in case of a problem.

So, one day, as I check for the status of my order, I learn, dumbfounded, through the courier's on-line tracking system (the company is TNT) that on the previous day, my order had... failed to find its recipient, although that, supposedly, took place while I was in my office, with other people, and no one had attempted to reach me on my mobile.

I contacted Mrs Carvalho immediately through e-mail, citing what had happened, and the answer was ... perfect silence.

Despite 4 consecutive e-mails, extremely polite at first, and progerssively more pressing, this fine lady refused, not only to give any kind of solution, not only to apologize, not even to state that they bear no responsibility, but even to answer to a simple e-mail.

I have done quite many on-line purchases, and never had any problem in the past. But I have never come across such poor service or disgusting behavior before.

So, go ahead and buy Musgo Real products - they are far above average, mut refrain doing so from the company itself. They simply suck...
Last Christmas my stepfather got me a number of shaving related goodies, and got me absolutely hooked on the whole wet shaving process.

One of the gifts was a tube of Musgo Real, which I immediately took a liking to. The scent is intoxicating, it fills the room with that classy, manly smell. I have to stop and enjoy the scent while lathering, before I can bring the brush to my face.

I think that Musgo is the first cream that I really was able to improve my lather skills with. It took a long time to figure out, but with just the right amount of water I can form lustrous, stiff peaks in no time.

For about $10 a tube, its a steal! Its a must have for everyone's shave den!

Honestly, that Christmas tube of Musgo Real is the FIRST thing that I actually used the entire tube of. I recently got another tube, and the aftershave basalm to go with it.

Excuse me, but I think I have to go shave now...

This is great stuff. For less than 15 bucks, you can't go wrong here.

In my opinion this is excellent quality, it is even better than taylor IMO.

The scent is very different, very classic, but I absolutely love it.

The lather is very rich and forgiving, no complaints here whatsoever.

A little goes a long way, about a dime sized amount for 3 passes.

It's not as moisturizing as other creams, but it protects so well you don't really need any moisturizing properties.

Packaging IMO doesn't really have a whole lot to do with the product itself:mellow: but it's ok. I knew green was my favorite color for some reason.

This is now my favorite shaving cream to use.

Its mid afternoon and the scent still lingers. love this cream!
Its fairly cheap for a cream - admittedly not as cost effective as a soap though.
The quality is excellent and the scent is amazing - very fresh, green and herbaceous, one of the best aspects is the scent! (Edit: To be more specific about the scent - I find it smells a lot like a freshly mowed lawn just before a thunder storm. What type of lawn I hear you ask? Buffalo and Cooch.). It lathers to a great standard very easily - the sweet spot is broad and not hard to find.
Efficacy - I do a 3 pass shave and get fantastic results, very smooth to shave with, good cushioning and pretty good lubrication.
It moisturizes relatively well but not as well as some higher end creams, although I normally follow up with Nivea ASB anyway. Packaging is fine. Metal tubes are nicer than plastic ones, but not as nice as tubs.
If you haven't tried Musgo yet, but you've read this many reviews about it then you know what to do!

I have been using this creme for about a month now and can say I am really impressed. If this were the only product in my den I would be fine with that. Well, the creme coupled with the Musgo A/S splash that is. The only issue I could possibly think of is that the creme is so thick it's kinda a pain to squeeze out the tube. Again, no biggie. A little of this green stuff goes a long way. I have no problems with it clogging up my brush or leaving any residue on my razor due to the lanolin. I have very sensitive skin and I find that most cremes or soaps will irritate my skin. This creme and A/S is the best product I have found thus far for sensitive skin. I get moderate irritation from a lot of A/S as well, even the well liked Speick which I own. The Musgo A/S splash goes perfectly with this stuff and is also great for sensitive skin. The two used together is the best skin care products I have ever used.

I took the advise from another B&B member and superlathered with the Musgo lime oil soap. This stuff is designed to be used as a preshave wash. It works and smells great but I began to get a little irritation. Must be the lime oil.

My next Musgo purchase will be the Musgo EDT#1. This stuff smells amazing and is my wifes favorite.

Price: Not too bad for a "fine shaving cream"...

Quality: Top notch.

Scent: Unobtrusive. "Green". Clean, nice and refreshing.

Latherability: Very good lather, I am quite happy with the thick lather I was able to produce on my face.

Efficacy: Absolutely Smooth gliding, never a feeling of dryness.

Moisturizing Properties: Very Nice!

Packaging: Simple, old world elegant without feeling too outdated or too pretentious.
I read with interest the comments by others on this shave cream. My experience is very different. It does lather well, when you can get it to dissolve. It does moisurize well, but not as well as Prosaso or Tabac. But the smell, well, if this is "herbal" or "grassy", then I must just be smelling something different.

To me it smells exactly like the evil green soap that was found in the bathroom of my elementary school. the soap we used before lunch and after recess. The soap that stained the floor. The soap that ran thorugh your fingers when you pushed up on the upside down teardrop-shaped soap dispenser. The soap that made your hands smell like evil green soap when you returned to class.

It is indeed a "classic" smell. But for me this is not a smell that I remember with fondness. YMMV.

A classic, a must try. Will not blow you away like proraso, but will perform solid in same price range. I like woodsy green scents like this. Superb with MWF superlather. Nothing bad at all to say. It's just not as decadent higher priced offerings.

I've been meaning to test Musgo Real for quite a while, but I always ended up deferring it to try other things. In one way I'm glad I did because I don't think I would have bothered sampling anything else after Musgo. I'm just astounded at how awesome this cream is.

Price/Quality/Packaging: $10 a tube, not the very cheapest but not expensive either. The tube is metal and comes in a nice box; basic, recyclable, totally fine. The tube is sealed initially (you use the cap to break the seal) so if you want to hoard it (and I can imagine why you would) it probably keeps very well.

Scent: Wonderful, clean and fresh. Comments on B&B led me to expect something a little more earthy and musky. This is a refined, European but nonetheless barbershoppy scent. Really nice, doesn't stick around after the shave as far as I can tell.

Latherability/Efficacy/Moisturizing: I haven't used this too many times but it seems to lather very well, maybe a little less volume than Proraso, a little shinier and wetter looking, but nonetheless opaque and cushiony. This is by far the best cream I've ever used (Spieck and Cyril Salters tie for second). It gave a superb, comfortable shave, and it's actually moisturizing! This is the only shaving cream I've used that really seems to moisturize almost as much as a balm. No need for aftershave with this one. Left my face feeling great - no razor burn, no dryness.

I can see why this is a classic!

A very nice cream that everyone should try at least once.

Price
Reasonably priced

Quality
High, no doubt about that

Scent
I am not quite sure about the scent yet, but it is growing on me. Some days I kinda likes it and other days it just doesn't work for me at all

Latherability
Very high. Does not need as much water as most creams to make great and plentifull lather

Efficacy
A little gots a very long way

Moisturizing Properties
Works nicely with my dry skin, but not my most moisturizing cream

Packaging
I really like the simple cardboard box and the classic metal tube. Simple and efficant

Regards.

A very good shaving cream that delivers an excellent, irritation-free shave for me. The lather has to be seen to be believed, skin protection is very good.
No cream or soap actually moisturizes my face, after all this is not what soap is supposed to do , but it certainly doesn't leave the face feeling dry. Packaging is fantastic, everything just says "old school", which I like very much.
The scent I don't find as exciting as other users, for me it could be greener.
Pricing is expensive, I can get 3 tubes of Speick for the same price.

Edit: To be fair it should be said that MR contains 100ml, Speick 75ml.

not top of the line
While I like the scent OK, this stuff just doesn't cut the mustard for me. I can easily get a slick, glidey, cushiony lather from Speick, Trumpers, Fraser, T&H, Derby - anything halfway decent really. But this stuff just doesn't work no matter how much or how little I use, or how much or how little water I add.

It does leave my face feeling OK. But the shave is not pleasant.
