Herban Cowboy Shave soap

Pros: great sent, locally available
Cons: poor lather
I picked this up a week or so ago at Whole Foods with my girlfriend because she liked the sent. So on the 12th before Valentines I decided to give it a go so I would know what to expect in two days before I took her out and what not. I built the lather in a cup with my omega bore and no matter how much soap I loaded it always seemed airy. I added water and now it was just soupy. I added more soap and it was airy again. I figured whatever Ill try it and started to apply the lather. It was thick and smelt great but by the time I moved my brush to the other side of my face the lather had already dried to practically nothing. I reapplied the lather three times with the same results. I knew what I was about to do was a bad idea, but I had to try it anyway. I attempted a wtg pass with my slant. I got one stroke and washed it off and went back the cream I had been using. I was so disappointed with the results I havent been bothered to try it again, and I most likely wont. Maybe Ill use it as a shower soap since it does smell great, but I wont be purchasing this again or recommending it to anyone.

Pros: Scent
Cons: A little thin on protection
This is my first experience with a shaving soap.

My wife fell in love with the scent of this stuff so I figured I'd give it a try. I tried a first lather the night before I was going to use it for the first time. With my bargain basement (I'm new to wet shaving) fine badger hair brush and about a minute's worth of mixing, I got a good lather. After rinsing my hands in the sink of hot water, I notice the lather disappeared almost instantly which was unusual considering I'd only used creams to that point.

The next day, I got another good later after a five second spin on the cake of soap. Unfortunately, it seemed like the lather wasn't really lubricating my face very well. My razor seemed to pull a bit more than I was comfortable with and the blade was brand new.

On day two, I decided to try adding a pump of Kiss My Face shaving cream. This way I could get the scent my wife seemed to linger around the bathroom while I shaved to smell and still get the protection for my face. Significantly better results. The same five second spin with the pump of cream yielded a very nice lather, and tons of it, that protected my face much more than just the soap alone.

My review says I recommend this soap, which I do if and only if you combine it with a cream of some kind.

Pros: cheap, readily available, smells good
Cons: thin, wimpy lather
I bought a cake of this soap along with an Herban Cowboy brush. In spite of the fact the lather is thin and wimpy, the soap actually performed fairly well. It seemed to matter more the type of brush I used. My usual choice is boar bristle but it worked better with Badger. Although the lather seemed to fade quickly, it still left a thin, slippery film on my skin which was adequate for a good shave. It seems to me that lubrication is the most important thing in shaving. I once did a complete shave using Olive oil rather than shaving cream. It wasn't ideal but it did work. Most of the reviews for this soap seem to be fairly negative, but to me it just wasn't that bad. AB

At first I could not lather it, so I used it as bath soap for a few days (great scent!). Then I tried it again, now the soap was soft, so I could easily mould it into a HC mug. Lathered it up with the method for Italian soft soaps. Worked fine. Got a nice shave out of it, lather was ok. Scent is still great. Decent soap with a very good scent, and "pure" ingredients. Worth a try.

I really enjoy this soap. Agreed that it disappears on face but somehow still allows for a good shave. Scent is very mild and one I like when I want a relaxing mood. Price and availability is great and when I do not really need an "peppy" feelling in the morning I go for this product.
I was living in Puerto Rico when a friend from Chicago give me two of this soap like gift a few years ago. I like the shape and the smell bt when I tried to make lather , I see bubbles and no foam , I tried and tried , I used less water but nothing same result . I know was the quality of the soap becouse
I used a variety of difrents soap regular, glicerine soap, triple muller soap, like
Dr Harris, La toja , truefitt and Hill, Tabac, Altisse and others . That was my bad experience with this soap . the company have a good web presentation
but the soap is no so good

I would not buy this again. Like most people here, I tried it because of the scent. Reminded me of my grandpas cologne. How ever I was not happy with it.

It does not lather well, not as bad as everyone else seems to think, it lathers better than the Van Der Hagen which I normally use. How ever Van Der Hagen makes OK super lather, no luck there with this stuff.

I also found it very drying and slightly irritating to leave on my face too long. I have extremely sensitive skin and while I was able to get through my normal 3 passes with it, I can't say it was enjoyable. But it wasn't so bad that I had to get it rinsed off right away or anything.

I would certainly recommend staying away from this product unless you has super tough leathery skin and absolutely love the smell. I'm going to keep it around for baths and such, because my wife kind of like the smell too, but I wont be shaving with it again.

I am all for more natural, healthier, and pure products and goods. But a lot of times, these "organics" products are subpar, unsafe, or does not work, but flat out lies from these companies. They play into people's fears and sometimes put dangerous products out(for example not being properly anti-microbial). Well Herban Cowboy soap isn't dangerous, it just plain sucks. IF their was one shaving soap that failed at everything, this is it. I have tried three times to shave with this product before feeling guilty giving it to someone for free. The lather does not stay, doesn't shave nicely or glides well, smell is atrocious, and waste of money. I'm glad their are other shavers here that agree with on this, then across the street where I was attacked and villainized for mentioning this product was bad when they didn't try it. So people, at least go for Tabac or Iricsh Moos for starter.

You know I was looking over the reviews from all the people saying they really liked the smell of this soap and I was surprised. I really wanted to complain about the smell. But, I thought, with all these good reviews on the smell, mabye I should go back and check it again. So, I just went and gave it a whiff... nope it's terrible, I was right.

The smell is way to perfume-y for me. And not a good perfume, either. It's like a cheap generic flower scent. It smells like a hotel soap.

It actually lathers pretty well for me. But, like a couple of other people said, it does dry out fast. You're probably applying twice per pass. Not too bad, kinda standard really.

But, the smell is so offensive to me that I really can't use it.

Nice smell but lather sucks! It is quite bubbly and not creamy at all. Harsh shave and the bubbles don't last at all. Will be my last puck of this stuff. Good concept but it doesn't work.
I am going to echo pretty much what the other reviews have said. I picked this up at my local hippie food store. It smells great. You can lather all day long with this soap and at first it seems to be doing great. The proble is It's all gone before you can get half way done shaving.

I needed to pick up some produce after work today so I decided to swing across town to hit Earth Fare so I could also check their shaving & soap shelves since it's been several months since my last visit. Being based out of Asheville, I figured they'd carry a decent supply.

As I expected, the soap shelf was loaded. The shaving shelf, not so much. There were two brands of cream (not familiar with the names; I hadn't heard either of them mentioned here) and 1 puck of shaving soap. I opted for the latter: Herban Cowboy - Dusk. The box boasts that it's 70% organic, 100% vegan.

I showered and soaked my head as I always do to prep for the shave, loaded the brush, and lathered up. It took a little longer than usual, but I got it to a good looking lather. I started at the crown of my head, working forward, and finished up the rest of the top of my head. When I got to the sides, however, all the soap was gone... I lathered the rest of my head (both sides and back) up again, worked the right side, and noticed the left side was nearly bare again so I hurried up and finished that side so I could lather the back up again.

I couldn't get this soap to keep a lather at all, and I also noticed the top of my head - especially the forward area towards, and including, the forehead - was burning a little.

I do think I got a good shave, though. However, I don't know if this is attributed solely to the soap itself, the fact that I had to lather up 2-3 times, the new blade, or that my last shave was a 3-pass BBS. That was the first time I'd done a 3-pass/ATG so it could also be, in part, why my head was sensitive/burning. I don't know.

I'm glad it wasn't just me. I picked this up from the local Earth Fare hoping it would be a nice addition to add to my soap/creme rotation. Sadly, I was very disappointed with a lack of lather, and of that that made it onto my face it fizzled away to a "soap scum" layer on my face quickly. I ended up rinsing it off and going back to my creme... :(

What a horrible soap. I purchased it out of curiosity - It was cheap and the scent was interesting.

I could not get a lather out of it no matter what I tried. I finally decided to shave with the sad lather I had formed because it was very slippery feeling and figured why not give it a try.

I am not sure if I am allergic to something in it, but after working the suds on my face it started to burn more and more and more. I got a couple of strokes in, but then had to wash it off. Or at least I tried washing it off my face but the oil base made it very difficult. I was left with an uncomfortable burny feeling the rest of the day.

I tried this a while back, mainly because I liked the scent. The short story is, it never lathered very well for me, even when I tried making superlather, it performed poorly. Williams performs much better in my opinion. Also it tended to dry my skin out quite a bit more than I like.

It does make for a nice bath soap, but I won't be buying any more. As always YMMV.
