What's new

BIC Chrome Platinum (Greek)

As for price, these were given to me as a sample by Charles at Enchante.

The quality seems on par with other razors, but how do you judge quality, exactly? Well, they weren't rusty.

Sharpness was below average. I'm a Feather / Straight guy and these just felt tame.

I never seem to go through blades as fast as some other fellows on this site, so longevity wasn't an issue.

Smoothness was the biggest problem I had. Using my regular routine, method, and products, these blades really hamburger-ized my face. I am still itching two days after my last shave with them. My face was left raw and scratchy, and unpleasant all around.

Packaging was the same as everyone else. If this was a banana fan site, would we review the peels?

Overall, not for me. Not the worst blade I've ever tried, but not far from the bottom of the list.

The first shave with each blade was great. I give it lower reviews, because without fail the second shave was much rougher on the face. I tried twice to get three shaves out of the blades, but I don't think my face has since forgiven me...:eek::frown::frown:

This review has been written after exclusive use of Merkur blades.
Safety razor = Merkur 38C

Price: 1 € per 5 blades.
Quality: overall quality very good. Have yet to evaluate consistency between blades (review update will follow)
Sharpness: Much sharper compared to Merkur. Also provides closer shave.
Longevity: 6 shaves with my usual 2,5 passes. I did not experience any tugging during those 6 shaves and it was still smoothly gliding over my skin. Closeness of the shave was less at the end; I expect due to loosing it's sharpness. More shaves would be definitely possible but 6 shaves for 0,20 € was cheap enough for me to swap to a new blade.
Smoothness of Shave: If shaving with a Merkur blade would be like ice-skating on roughed up ice where people have been skating for hours on, then the BIC blade would feel like ice-skating just after the break when they smoothed the ice with those big machines and the ice is shiny as a mirror again.
Packaging: I like the finish and materials used. No plastic.

I discovered that there is indeed a huge difference in shaving satisfaction and results between blades, even at lower costs.
If I would not be temped to order a blade sampler pack, I would definitely happily settle with these BIC blades!

Be sure to try the BIC's !!!

They are not sharp enough; comparable to IP for me, slightly less sharp though.
The price is at the lower end of the scale, but value for money they are not. Astras are the same price but offer a sharper blade.

Couldn't finish 1 shave, so no idea how long they last.

Used with my Parker 22c, which admittedly is my first/only DE to date, but mine seems to be reasonable quality and I've been using it just fine for several months, never having to compromise on a DFS.
Lather from C&E Nomad soap first shave, switched to Bigelow's Proraso cream for the second shave in an effort to increase slickness/protection.

First shave three passes -- wtg, xtg, atg. Plus touch-up.
Second shave two passes -- wtg, atg. Plus touch-up.

Price: Came with a sampler pack from West coast, so I haven't figured individual pricing yet.

Quality: Might as well have a serrated edge. But I exaggerate. I used quite a bit of the styptic pencil after the first shave. Tried the same blade next day, in case it mellowed a bit, as some blades do after one shave, but it was actually worse the second shave.

Sharpness: I guess this is okay, because I was reasonably smoother, nicks and weepers not withstanding, after each pass.

Longevity: N/A because I just didn't want to use it any more after the second shave.

Smoothness of Shave: Again, nicks/weepers aside, and after I'd cleared out the slickness of the blood on my face/neck, I guess it'd pass as a DFS.

Packaging: Best part of the whole thing. Fairly simple, cardboard box and paper envelopes, all parts recyclable.

Overall I'd say these are comparable to the Personna Platinum Chrome blades sold at Wal-Mart. I couldn't stand to finish the 10-pack of those, and just moved the last three blades from the dispenser to the "blade bank" on the bottom without even using them.

After trying the Bics, I'm skipping a day and using a Dorco ST-300 for a week to recover.

Is it sharp? Oh, yeah...

I have (had) a mole on my left cheek that the sharpest straights and Feather-loaded DEs politely ignored -- until this blade sliced it off. Raised heck with what are my usually minor problem areas as well.

I can accept a sharp, focused blade, but this one only stayed that way for one shave. On the second shave I could feel and hear it laboring to get the job done. By the end of the "shave," it had resorted to pulling my beard out by the roots.

Truly nasty. This is the first time I have given up on a brand after trying only one blade, but I refuse to go through that experience again.

Price - I've got mine in a sampler pack but they seem to be average priced blades.

Quality - Looks like to be of high quality.

Sharpness - Sharper than Derbys or Merkurs and seems to be about the same sharpness as the Israeli Crystal blades. Pretty good.

Longevity - Not too good. 2 okay shaves, on the final pass on shave 2 it started giving me problems..

Smoothness of Shave - Okay but nothing special. I find Crystals or Derbys smoother.

Packaging - Excellent. I like the simple cardboard boxes :)

Overall - Useable, but I won't be getting any more of these.

I popped one of these yellow BIC blades in my trusty Muhle R-41. After my third pass my my neck was still raspy. Another two clean up passes and it was as if no hair was cut at all! I was very disappointed in this blade - it ranks down there with the dull US Personnas. I still have 4 blades left in this pack but I don't intend on using them. They simply do not cut my beard but they sure do a number on skin. In contrast, red pack Israeli Personnas slice through it quickly.
First blade I never completed a shave with. Tugs, drags, slices me up.
I tried it with a red tip and a merkur classic, neither worked well with this blade.

I tried it months later with a new blade in a regular 1960s super speed and a 1970s super adjustable, still not working for me, so I will not try these blades again.

I thought I'd give these a try. I was pretty excited about them, after hearing about how smooth they were. But wait a minute. Isn't Bic known for their pens? That's what I thought...given that, my expectations were set pretty low.

Smoothness I know had had low expectations, but even so, I was blown away by how smooth they were. I honestly thought that they were as smooth as a Feather. Maybe smoother.

Sharpness: To me, it just seemed not as sharp as my Gillette Swede, and that it took more time to achieve the same result. But I have to say, they are forgiving blades.

Vital Details: The Blade was loaded in my HD, and I used Provence Sante, (yesterday - 2.19.09) and Tabac today. The brush I used was the B&B 2006 Silvertip Ltd. Ed. I also followed Kyle's How to Prep. Pre shave. I can't shave without it...

Price: WCS standard. Nice.

Packaging: When I received my first similarly packaged set of 5 blades to a pack, I said, there's no way this is going to fit my DE. They're too small. So, I took the box, and I sized it against a DE I had. A perfect fit.

It's just like everyone says, Packaging is minimal. A cardboard box that surrounds the DE blade.

All's well that ends well.

OK, I am still a newcomer to DE wetshaving (less than a year) but after trying out these little Greek rascals I have to say these blades are right up there with the Derby blades and are definitely in my rotation. It could have been a combination of things that made the morning chore a delight but I have to attribute a lot of it to these BIC blades. I got a darn nice BBS without any weepers, irritation or problems. I loaded a fresh blade in my Schick Krona and lathered up a nice mug of Williams and the rest was history.

As compared to the Walmart Personnas, Feathers, Derby, and Dorcos I would have to rate these right up with the Derbys. Nice blade. :001_smile
I shaved for the first time with one of these today, and it totally confounded my low expectations. Given the lukewarm opinions I've read on B&B and elsewhere, I was simply expecting one mediocre shave and to cross them off my list. Instead I got a smooth, close and comfortable shave in just two passes with no nicks, burn or drama.

I'll definitely be stocking up on these as a sort of poor man's "Swede". Even if, as is widely suggested, they don't go the distance, at the price I'd be happy to use them once and chuck 'em.

A good value choice.

I'm not that picky when it comes to blades, but these are my favorite.

Maybe that's because I bought 200 for 5 bucks.

Sharp, long-lasting - no complaints.
I may have gotten a bad batch of blades. The shaves from the first blade of the 5-pack was mediocre at best. The blade seemed as sharp as an American Personna; it took many passes and touch ups to get a decent shave. The first shave from the second blade from the pack really hacked up my face; the blade seemed duller than a Derby. Stupidily, I used the second blade a second time and really destroyed my face. I have spent the last 2 weeks using a Feather to recover from the carnage. My face has recovered and against sound logic I will probably try a third blade, but not for a while. Longevity of a blade is irrelevant to me since I dispose of a blade after 3 uses or less. The best attribute of these blades for me is the packaging - all paper - less waste. But, I can get Russian Gillette 7 O'clocks with all paper packaging and get an infinitely better shave.

I was anticipating these blades to be very sharp and smooth since I find the Bic single blade disposables sharp and pretty smooth, but non-rec. plastic. But, I was sorely disappointed - literally.

For me these are Swedes cheaper less attractive cousin.

They give me two good shaves. Their packaging is ehh.

For people who's whiskers are too stubborn for Derby's or feel guilty about using Swedes, These blades are the perfect compromise.

Theyre cheap, hold up better (for me) than the Derby's, are just as smooth, and nearly, but not quite as sharp as Swedes!

I got mine from dridiot.

Not a blade for me. Tired it in 3 different Razors and got pulling and tucking in all three of them. Not sure why as i use the same razors with other blades just fine. The first shave with these seems average but already the second shave is horrible with the BIC blades. Maybe a bad batch but i sure won't use them anymore!!

I easily get 6 shaves out of these with no irritation. Very sharp but smooth at the same time. I paid 20 cents per blade which is high for me. Great quality. Every blade will act the same. Packaging is not important for me so I knocked off 1 point for not being in a hard case. Recommended.

So I tried these out in a Sampler Pack and for the first two shaves, they were great. I use a three pass system (WTG, XTG, ATG). I've been using Tabac and Penhaligon's BB shave soap. Twice now the first two shaves have been very good and then excellent, but the third day was rough with more bleeding than I have had in a while. Strangely, I can get 4 or 5 shaves from a Merkur or Derby. I am wondering if these tend to rust quickly or they just dull from usage. But this is much less longevity than I am used to.

This brings them down a notch or two for me. The same experience was repeated 3 times with 3 different blades.

I used a Fatboy on 3 and an Aristocrat for these tests.

Price Good price. Not too expensive, a little cheaper than some.

Quality They appear to be well made; no burrs, chips, etc. on the edges, blad eis flat, registers well in the razor.

Sharpness Fairly sharp; a little sharper than the Dorco ST300 but not quite as sharp as the ST301.

Longevity I tired these several months ago and could barely get a complete shave out of a blade. Not because of the sharpness, but because of the roughness. I went back and tried tham again after several months (and a much improved shaving technique) and got about the same results.

Smoothness of Shave The only blades that have shaved me rougher than these are the Chroma and the Shogun. Even the Dorco ST300 was a smoother blade for me.

Packaging Minimalist packaging, each blade individually wrapped and boxed in cardboard. Not a lot of waste. Nice.

If you like them, great. I'll never use them again. As a point of reference, my current go-to blade is the Israeli Super+ Platinum from ASR. Plenty sharp and very smooth for me.
