Calling all VINTAGE SIMPSONS - Hear Ye Hear Ye

Quite impressed with this brush, had a few shedders, so I decided to clean with shampoo and conditioner. It doesn’t seem to be a tall knot, but when I whipped in the shampoo in my captains choice bowl I made lather! This is one serious brush that isn’t messing around.:biggrin1: Here are some new pictures as I received it today! Oh and btw, there are circles on the bottom!

My third butterscotch Simpson’s found in the wild...two best grade and one pure. Not sure if it’s because it’s a case but it seems the most usable, least floppy. It’s also darker butterscotch and feels denser somehow. This is the order of discovery.

Thanks for keeping this one rolling in my absence! I can't believe I initiated this 9 years ago! Now to grab a coffee and go through the lovely examples posted to date.

Anybody know if there was ever such a thing as a "23" model? I picked this one up today and it has all the hallmarks of a vintage Simpson right down to the lampblacking but it's missing the all important logo so presumably made for someone else? Either way it's a beautiful brush with an outrageously soft knot.

That looks like a Brooks brothers brush to my eyes. They were made by another UK maker (not Simpson or Rooney) whose name escapes me. They're most often confused with Rooneys, good quality brush, but much less recognizable name. Benwell I think?

Thanks Rudy. Hope you've been keeping in good health old friend. I'm on page 15 of this thread and some of the examples posted are lovely!

I think this is an old Simpson based off of the shadow left by label but not sure. Before and after. Re-knotted with TGN 22mm Grade A Flattop.

It is interesting the differences that can be noticed in Simpson models, none more so than the Major. I have just noticed that the lamp black text on my example is the other way up compared to yours - mine reads "5, Pure Badger, Sterilised, London Made", with no trace of a Simpson sticker. Also the shape of the section where the two main sections join is more pronounced on my brush.

Indeed. Just the visible differences between the two that are shown is easily seen. The one with the sticker is approximately 1/4 inch longer in the overall length of the body. Also the cap does not fit the no sticker. The TPI are the same but the ID is too small to screw together. Same with the brush head, will not screw together easily. My limited understanding of the manufacturing at Simpson, with all brushes being hand turned, it is the interpretation of the operator to finish the parts while being historically consistent with the past
