What's new

You Guys are probably tired of hearing this

But I Got A Good Lather With Williams Soap (New stuff) While Using my VDH Boar Brush.
When I get new Batteries in my camera In a few Days, I Will Post Pictures.

I don't think I ever get tired of hearing praises for software. That's why I'm here so much! I have not tried Williams... Yet. Enjoy your shave!

I started this whole DE process with new formulation Williams but, once the puck was finished, I didn't replace it. When I did use it, it lathered fine. Now I have some vintage Williams and I'm interested on how much better it may work.

I started with Williams and still have a few pucks on the shelf. Now that I know to use a lot of water with it I get good results with my VDH boar brush as well. It's a good, inexpensive, utilitarian soap. It's not a luxury item, though, which is more of what I've been into lately so doesn't get much use these days.

I don't get the hate for Williams. If you don't like it just don't use it.

Seems a simple enough solution. In the short time I've read and participated on this site, I've noticed a small, very small, number of shavers who tend to be hyper critical of certain products and vendors. Most, by far the vast majority, are restrained and courteous in their critiques of vendors and products. Many say YMMV, but sometimes it serves us well to remind ourselves of that simple truth. I don't begrudge anyone their shaving habits; whatever works for them is their business. I'm just glad someone pointed me here last spring. I've been enjoying the best shaves of my life ever since.

I was going to pick up a puck of Williams, but neither my local CVS, Walgreens, or anywhere else I could find had it in stock.

One of the oldest soaps still in existence, originally the yankee soap company. I would bet since 1840 is was the main soap used in the barber shops in the old west and home straight razor set ups.

Williams isn't a luxury item....unless you lather that lemony monster while listening to a little Charles Trenet. Then it becomes Pre de Guillaume, and the birds sing when you raise your pinky just a tiny bit as you load that brush.

I think that Arko has started taking some of the flak that used to be aimed at Williams here.

Well said, Pugsley. I too get good lather out of Williams and more than passable shaves. It doesn't leave my face feeling the way Mike's natural soaps do, but Williams cost only a buck versus the more expensive soaps.

I keep modern Williams around for test lathers and defunking new brushes, but I sometimes use it and it has great slickness and a fine lather can be made, it just takes a little longer. After the bomb frops it will be cockroaches and Williams baby :biggrin1:

I think the issue is moisture. I've used Williams before and never really got a very good lather out of it and eventually tossed it. Last night I got another puck and grated it into a cup with a bit of water. I noticed that the outside edges were very dry & brittle but it was softer in the middle. Once I got it moist & pressed it into the cup I decided to lather it up for a shave and proceeded to make an absolutely fantastic lather with it. If you've tried Williams before & had disappointing results or felt you had to work too hard at it then grate it into a cup with a bit of distilled water & give it a try again. This lather was voluminous and slick and a great shave ensued.

I've seen some in Krogers around your part of the state.

Would love to find one that has it, all the Krogers around me just carry the VDH, as does the Walgreens. The CVS that did have it has pulled any from the shelf, and the manager told me they are not carrying it anymore.

Anyone got any ideas where I might pick up a puck or 2?
