What's new

Yesterday the postman delivered - 89L and blades!

Yesterday was a good day. It started with my doorbell ringing while I was having my breakfast and a stressed postman handed me a box and then told me to sign on his hand-held device. Turns out that this box contained the 89L that I had ordered (while I do like my 86, the 89L just looked too pretty to resist!). Excellent! I fiddled with it some, regretting that my daily shave allready had happened.

And then, when I came home from work, my blade sampler pack that I had ordered arrived as well! Suddenly, not only did I have a new razor to try out, but blades as well! Feather, Derby, Astra SP, Crystal, Red personna, 7 o'clock, BIC, Merkur and Dorco sprawled out in front of me, all of them screaming "pick me! pick me!".

So this morning I picked up the 89L and tried to pick one. Feather, no thanks - the internet has scared me off them. Derby - allready tried them since they came with the 86. Red Personna, 7 o'clock, Dorco, BIC (same BIC as the pencils?), Crystal - they didnt feel right, not today anyway. So I picked up an Astra SP, put it in the razor and then started my prep, shower, preshave lubricant, TSOB cream lathered up nicely, badger to the face and then ...

I have to say, the Astras really did a number on me. WTG, XTG, XTG and ATG and my face is smoother than I got before and the trouble spots on my neck just above my adams apple and just below my chin - not a problem for the Astra SP.

Saying that I am pleased by the first shave with the Astra is an understatement, but I'll hold out judgement until I've tried it some more.
On one hand I am delighted to have found a blade that works for me, but also a little weary that I have a bunch of other blades who might never be tested. The poor things. So lets say I love the Astras, which of the other blades from the sampler would be my cup of tea? Derbys tug too much for me, if that helps as a point of reference.

tl;dr - Astra SP works fine for me, yay Astras.

Astra SP is my gold standard blade and the one I judge all others by (better than an Astra - not as good as an Astra)

It is also the blade I use in any new DE razor as I know that it is a consistent high quality blade and know what to expect from it (no surprises)

Inevitably you will want to see what the other blades can deliver. But Astra SP are a good bench mark for other blades. I think Rapira SS are very marginally better.
The Derby tugs a little on the first pass but by the 3rd pass it is getting the same result so I am happy to keep using them.
Yes, the 89 DL is a good razor but the 34C is better. The 37C is even better. Enjoy the EJ89. There are better, if you feel you need better combinations!
